The Parabola
Home The Parabola The Circle The Ellipse The Hyperbola

The main way that nature is seen in nature is through the use of gravity. When an object is propelled upward it follows a parabolic curve back to earth.

The curve of a projectile such as a cannonball follows a parabolic curve to its destination.

An antenna also uses a parabolic curve. The beam comes toward the parabolic surface and is brought into focus at the focal point.

bulletThe equation of a parabola on a horizontal vertex is 4px = y2.
bulletThe equation of a parabola on a vertical vertex is 4py = x2.

p = distance from vertex to focus (or directrix)
