COMPETITION RULES

FIGHTING / SPARRING

The tournament rules will be semi contact with rounds of 2 minutes. Fights will be stopped while Points are awarded. The winner will be the first person to score 5 full points or the person with the most points after 2 minutes.

Semi contact means that the hand or foot must touch the target area to score, obviously good technique and not just a light touch will qualify a ‘hit’. The contact must however be strictly controlled so as not to injure the opponent.

Two opponents will be differentiated by either a blue or a red ribbon tied to the back of their belt.

Judging of points scored will be done by the referee assisted by 4 corner judges. Whenever a judge feels a point has been scored he must shout out ‘POINT’ whereupon the referee will stop the bout, all the judges will bow their heads and he will call score. The judges wil then hold up either a red or a blue flag depending on who they thought scored. Two points would be indicated by holding up the flag and extending 2 fingers of that hand.

The target area will be, from the waist up, the front of the body, i.e. the face chest and stomach. Sides and sides of the head also score. Hits to the back are strictly forbidden, as are low kicks, low punches and sweeps.

POINT SCORING

1 POINT IS AWARDED for; any kick to the body and any punch to the body or face.

2 POINTS ARE AWARDED for any kicks to the head, jumping kicks* to the body and head

* Jumping or flying kicks that score must have both feet clearly off the ground at the moment of impact. All flying kicks especially to the head must be well controlled.

PENALTIES

A record of warnings will be kept by the scoring table, 3 warnings will result in a point being deducted.

WARNINGS : Travelling (running out of the ‘ring’), Low kicks (below the waist), turning the back (except when executing kicks), Feigning injury, Aggressive or uncontrolled blows. Taunting an opponent.

POINTS DEDUCTED : Accumulating 3 warnings, Low kicks or uncontrolled blows that hurt the opponent, any swearing.

DISQUALIFICATION: Dissention (arguing with the refferee), Low or uncontrolled blows which either draw blood or injure an opponent.

NB! Blows which accidentally draw blood, eg. Where the fighter moves into the blow, will not result in disqualification, but rather a warning or deduction once the Judges and Referee have consulted.

PROTECTION : All fighters will wear mitts which cover the knuckles and back of the hand, foot guards which cover the instep and top of the foot and preferably the back on the heel. All male contenders will wear a groin guard or face disqualification.

Optional items include shin pads and chest protectors.

Head gear is highly recommended.

THE RING

Fights and forms will be done in a 7 x 7m ring.

TEAM DEMONSTRATION INCLUDING FORMS & PATTERNS RULES

Demonstrations will be done in teams of 3 or more to make judging across styles easier. Forms will then be judged on discipline, timing, focus, control and originality. The demos are expected to be vibrant and dynamic and illustrative of your style and syllabus. Each demonstration must include a team pattern done by 3 or more members of the team this portion must last at least 45 seconds of the demonstration time.

5 judges will score the demonstration ranging between 4 and 10 including half points. The highest and lowest scores will be eliminated, leaving the total of the remaining 3. If after all teams have been scored and their are teams tyed all 5 scores will be added to differenciate between those two teams.

Demonstrations in the team events may be no longer than 10 minutes including setup and walk on.

This section will include as many clubs as possible and should be the highlight of the day, giving us all some insight into each others arts and creating a festival atmosphere. There is a floating trophy on offer for the best demonstration team and medals for 2nd and 3rd placed teams. This is a MAASA sactioned event so we would like as many clubs and styles to demonstrate and exhibit their art.

WEAPONS CATEGORY

Weapons forms will be done individually and judged on 3 criteria; Presentation, Style and Martial Application. Judging will be done by at least 3 judges, who will score the forms individually. The individual with the highest total after all forms have been scored will be the winner. In the case of a tie, individuals may be asked to repeat their forms and be rescored.

All students must bring their own weapons for their form and should endeavour to do something from their style's syllabus. This is not a creative discipline so 'made up' forms are discouraged.
