Wishing Upon A Star

April 24
Back at it

Today was one of those days when I heard "What are you doing here? You should be at home." At least once every fifteen minutes. (I'm sure this rattling cough was irritating to listen to, but I wasn't enjoying myself either!)

It was all I could do to stifle the urge to firmly wrap my hands around the throat of that person and shake the hell out of him/her while shouting, "What do you think I'm doing here? I'm working!! You know someone else who can do the testing and write the reports?!?!"

I get sick every vacation lately and I know it’s due to stress. Except no one believes that teachers have stressful jobs. (except other teachers of course!)

I can't begin to tell you how often I've heard things like "are you ever going to get a real job?' Teaching isn't real because we deal with kids. This can't be stressful. Viscous circle.

I know what happens though. I keep pushing and pushing even though I might feel lousy. I don’t allow myself any real down time and convince myself that I can keep on going, even if I should really just go into a hibernating mode.

Finally, I get to vacation, start to unwind and rest up, and Whammo! All the germs that have been warring for attention go on the attack. That’s why I end up with multiple symptoms.

These germs have been laying in wait for so long that they have developed super powers and therefore become impossible to get rid of.

So now I’m back at the scene of the germ’s origin and they are doing little battles within me. But all rest time is over and I have to start pushing again.

Which will make them even harder to get rid of.

That’s all.

I need sleep.

Trivia: What's the hottest kind of flame?

The hottest flames known to science are made by burning a mixture of oxygen and acetylene (C2H2). The flame of an oxyacetylene torch can reach a temperature of more than 3300 degrees Celsius (5972 F), hot enough to melt metal even underwater or in the extreme cold of Antarctica. Why does acetylene produce such a hot flame? The secret is in the molecule's structure: It contains two carbon atoms joined by a high-energy triple bond, with a hydrogen atom capping each end of the molecule. When the triple bond is attacked and broken by oxygen atoms, a very large amount of energy is released. Because of its extremely high energy content, acetylene is also one of the most explosive gasses. Even a small amount, if it explodes, can create a shock wave intense enough to kill a person and flames hot enough to inflict severe burns.

Cool word:paragon [n. PARE-uh-gone]

If you never could describe what made the teacher's pet so special this word should help. That special student was likely a paragon, someone who has a particularly large amount of a positive characteristic (as in virtue, honesty, or discretion). A paragon is the model of excellence. A peerless example of some particular trait, a paragon is perfection of a kind. Near synonyms include model, standard, and archetype. Example: "Linda was well-respected because she was a paragon of discretion." While it is certain this adjective is ideal, its origins are unclear. It is likely taken from the Greek parakonon, a verb formed from para (alongside) and akonan (sharpen). Instead of comparing someone against another person, the Greeks would "sharpen" them against others. Today, we're left with a paragon sharpening the teacher's pencils while the rest are compared with this virtuous student.
