![]() I know, I know ![]() ![]() I know, I’ve been absolutely horrible about keeping any kind of journal at all in the last month. My paper journal is a mess, stuff falling out of it all over the place, tidbits that should have been glued in remain unglued. My only excuse is that I had a sudden burst of motivation and got so wrapped up in projects that I have been promising to finish, and that should have been started back in July, that I’ve abandoned almost everything else. And now SCHOOL STARTS TOMORROW! I don’t wanna go, you can’t make me! I don’t wanna!!
![]() ![]() Actually, I think that I’m just astonished that the summer is over. I know it was ten weeks long, but it sure didn’t fell like that! I was at school two days last week. One to do more training for the web master job, the other to interview applicants for teaching assistant positions. We had some great people interview for the assistants jobs, and I left thinking that we had filled all the positions. Unfortunately one of the women turned down the job we offered, so we still have one unfilled position. But this is not as bad as it’s been in other years when we’ve had no one for the first few weeks of school. Given that the intensity of the needs of the kids isn’t quite as great as it’s been in past years, I’m not as worried as I usually am.
![]() ![]() Of course I’m still not ready to go back! It always takes me a while to get back into the swing of paperwork and parent meetings, so I’m not looking forward to that part. I am looking forward to seeing some of the folks I’ll be working with this year. There are three teachers that I know I’ll enjoy working with, as I have in the past. I like going back to catch up with the lives of all these folks too. My principal has been particularly upbeat with me this summer, so this bodes well for the school year. I think he has a better understanding – and appreciation- for what it is that the special ed department does.
![]() ![]() My biggest concern is getting back to this early morning schedule. I have been staying up really late the last couple of weeks, then sleeping until nine in the morning, I don’t usually do that and it’s going to be tough getting back into a work schedule. I really do hate the alarm clock and five thirty a.m.! I’ve even been taking a twenty -minute power nap in the afternoon. This wasn’t planned, it just seemed to happen when I sat down to watch the two o’clock craft show. I know I’m always tired at the beginning of the year, so I should be prepared for this by now. But I’m not. I’m willing to bet that we will be entering into one of the worst heat waves of the summer during the next two weeks. It’s a school opening tradition! ![]() ![]() Listening to: Aida- Cast recording Reading: Genuine Lies Nora Roberts Weather: sunny, 78 Trivia: What is the largest construction project in the world? There has never been a construction project as massive and expensive as China's Three Gorges Dam. This gigantic dam, which will be sixty stories high and 2.3 kilometers long (1.4 miles), will create a reservoir longer than Lake Superior. Scheduled for completion in 2009, the Three Gorges Dam is expected to cost $27 billion and will generate as much electricity as would 18 nuclear power plants. The massive construction project is also highly controversial, and has generated domestic and international opposition. The reservoir it will create will drown many towns and villages, beautiful valleys, and historic sites. The ecosystem of the Yangtze River downstream of the dam will be permanently changed and some species may become extinct. Cool word: enigma [n. ih-NIG-muh or e-NIG-muh] An enigma is something perplexing and hard to explain. It can also be a person who is difficult to understand completely, someone whose behavior seems inexplicable. Example: "Willie Wonka was an enigma -- nobody ever saw him or any of his workers, yet his factory continued to produce truckloads of the best chocolate." Enigma, an English word since the 15th century, comes from the Latin aenigma. This was derived from the Greek ainigma, from the Greek ainissesthai (to speak in riddles). Ainissesthai was a variant of ainos (fable). Near synonyms include puzzle, riddle, conundrum, brainteaser, and mystery.
