Wishing Upon A Star

August 30
Start of School

I’m back from my trip and had a great time. I’m going to add update pages for those days as I can, but it’s going to take a while to get it all typed up.

I sort of wish I had a laptop, but I don’t think it would make any big difference in how soon it gets done.

Time is a crunch now.

Today was the first day back at school. No kids are involved yet, just meeting, after meeting, after meeting….

And it’s all a yawn. Or else it’s something that makes your blood pressure rise.

It hasn’t changed in the twenty-four years that I’ve been doing this.

Ah the glamour of teaching!

There are no interesting details or changes that have been put in place. Other than some new staff members we are just continuing on as if we’ve never left.

It certainly feels as if we’ve never left!

The office is in chaos. Boxes that were supposed to have been moved this summer are still sitting where we left them, and new boxes of supplies have been stacked on top of them.

One of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen seems to have taken place with the order of our office supplies. I asked for three purple legal size pads @ 1.36 each. Total cost $4.08. This was clearly written on my budget sheet.

What did I get? Three PACKAGES of legal pads, twelve per package. Total cost? $56.86!!!!

Can these people READ??DO MATH??

I also got four packages of pens, instead of four pens, a bag of one dozen highlighters instead of one highlighter. The budget total was a good one hundred dollars over what I had submitted.

I could start a legal pad and purple pen concession on the side!

It’s gonna be a long year if this is any indication of how things are going to be going….

I did something for shock value today.

While I was in New York I bought a magnetic nose ring and I wore it today.

I got quite a reaction…from horrified stares to humor, to good for you’s.

I’m sure they were thinking what is this old, fat broad trying to prove? Although a couple people really liked it.

I’m sure I’m the topic of conversation in some circles, especially at the middle school where I used to work. They were the horrified bunch, one of my friends there totally ignored it.

I carried it off for the entire day, and everyone thinks it’s real. I’ll wear it tomorrow too. I’ve already laid the groundwork to not wear it when the kids come, saying that I don’t think it’s necessarily appropriate or professional when working in a school.

Some people thought I should keep wearing it, as we have teachers who have tattoos, and heavily pierced ears, but I don’t know if I want to go that far.

I liked causing a stir. I may keep wearing it if I feel like it. I kind of like it. It makes me feel rebellious.

One school day down, one hundred and eighty-three left to go.

Ugh.
