Web Master?
Once again I received an unexpected request today. I was asked to be the school web master!

We have a decent amount of computers and have had quite a bit of training in various aspects of computer use, all funded by the school system. I’ve gotten a reputation of having an aptitude and ability to catch on quickly, and the teachers often come to me for help when they get stuck. So today the head of the technology department cornered me with this request.
There are many perks offered. They’re going to pay to have each building web master (there will be five of us) attend specific training sessions, so we learn the same stuff and have a uniform look across the system.
My HTML skills are pretty basic, and all self-taught, so formal training will be right up my alley. It might also be helpful in my search for a new career.
They are also going to pay us a salary similar to what coaches get; we’ll get new computers with bells and whistles. (They called them "souped-up models".) And they will make sure we have all the software we need to do it from home, if that’s what we choose to do! I explained that I had a Mac at home, but they were unfazed.
It’s important that I be able to do all the work at home. I’m the type of person who takes work home to do it, as I need to leave the building at the end of the day.
I think I tend to feel closed in or trapped by the building and the stuff it contains.
I need to be able to go home, put on my robe, grab a cup of tea, and work in comfort. I can have the t.v. or stereo on, and get things done in a non-stressful environment.

So if they’re willing to offer all of that stuff, I’m more than willing to give it a shot! I think I may even look forward to it.
I think the training sessions will be done during the school day, which is an even bigger perk! There’s something about learning on school time that I really like.
The rest of the school year may suck, but all this computer stuff is very exciting to me!

Today was another day that was full of meetings and chaos.
The meeting we had this morning, though, was fantastic. We listened to a speaker who came to talk about "bully-proofing" our school. This is my building’s piece of our social competency curriculum. This woman was just wonderful. She was well spoken, thoughtful and pertinent.
I can’t tell you how unusual that is in the world of education.
She only spoke for an hour, but I could have listened to her all morning.
Unfortunatley when she left we were back to our drudgery and nuts and bolts type of meeting. And they go on far too long.

They do feed us well the first couple of days of school. Yesterday the principal sprung for a sandwich buffet, and today the PTA fed us quiche and salads.
This is reminiscent of the last supper, as we’re back to reality tomorrow. Bring your own or shovel the school swill.

So now it’s time to sort out some more stuff that needs to be brought back in tomorrow and load up the car.
The Beverly Hillbillies would feel right at home.
