Delusions of Martha Stewart

Well, it's clear that I have too much unfocused time on my hands (not that there aren't many things that I could be doing to be focused).

I am actually starting a quilt. Notice I say starting. I'm realistic enough to know that there isn't much chance I'll ever finish it.

I have been watching way too many shows about sewing and crafting.

Suddenly I think I'm Martha Stewart.

It's not just the quilt, either. I'm also making soap, antiquing some shelves, learning about color theory (which is interesting but far more complicated than I imagined) and working on collages.

I'm also on a quest for a cheap pasta machine so I can work with polymer clay.

(Keeping in mind what I said about unfocused?)

My mother fell on Monday. Fortunately she didn't break anything but she's very sore and having a hard time moving. I have to keep an eye on her, she's apt not to tell us when things are worse.

I spent yesterday cleaning up after a sick cat. Suddenly it was not just puking and peeing, but diarrhea again. That was early in the morning, and he's been pretty good since. He did throw up a bit this morning, but I think that was partly a hairball problem.

So now my apartment is more chaotic than ever. There are piles of project stuff around, the bedroom is torn apart because the cat threw up under the bed, so I have to move everything to clean it up, and no, you may not drop by!

I will not be watching the British Open for fear of thinking I should be the next Tiger Woods...... Fore!

Trivia: How strong is a honeybee?

A honeybee can carry a burden 300 times its own weight. To equal this feat, a 250-pound man would have to carry a 35-ton truck on his back. No person has managed this feat at the present time, but honeybees do their heavy lifting every day.

Cool word: hokum [n. HOE-kum]

Something that appears to be impressive or legitimate but turns out to be untrue is hokum. Near synonyms include: utter nonsense, bunk, and claptrap. Originally theatrical slang, hokum traces back to between 1915 and 1920. Even today it refers to a stock technique or certain props onstage designed to elicit a sentimental response from the audience. The noun is believed to be a combination of the words hocus-pocus (words used in conjuring) and bunkum (insincere speechmaking). The adjective hokey (HO-key), which describes something silly, corny, or sappy, was formed from the word hokum. It was first recorded in 1927.
