![]() I’ll never be on television ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Martha Stewart's disowned sister here. Let's just say I don't see any television stations beating down my door and asking me to do a regular series!
![]() I didn't start with the quilt till about eight last night (although I had washed and dried all the fabric at 7am yesterday). I have encountered a series of mechanical difficulties with the sewing machines, and I'm not sure this thing I'm trying to make will even hold together if I do manage to finish it. Here’s the list as it currently stands: 1.)I have so many weird fabrics and no pattern to follow, so I'm trying to come up with interesting block designs. I keep hemming and hawing. 2.)I own three sewing machines. None of them work. Well, that's not strictly true. I have one tabletop Singer that I got at some tag sale, and I can't figure out how to get the bobbin to work. I've tried every configuration that I can think of. 3.)I have another Singer that's one of those in a cabinet. I think my sister-in-law gave it to me when she found it at a yard sale. I've never used it and it's buried under a ton of stuff, so it's not convenient (or for that matter accessible). 4.)The third Singer (notice a pattern?) is the machine I bought twenty-some-odd years ago, and that I used to make all the costumes when I was directing shows. The problem with this was the stitches weren't taking correctly and the tension wheel is sort of broken, so I can't figure out what tension it's actually set at. I finally got this machine to sew correctly at about 10 last night. 5.)My rotary cutter isn't working right. I guess I need a new blade, so I'll have to go to a craft or fabric store to find some extras. 6.)I don't think I have enough plain fabric and need a white or something. I may need to go to a fabric store.
![]() So I have exactly one block made. This is not going to be a quick project! I'm also approaching it backwards. I've decided which two fabrics I want to be the edges and I'm making those borders first. I know that's not how you're supposed to do it, but I want to cut those so I can see how much extra fabric I'll have to use in the blocks.
![]() Martha Stewart's eyes would be rolling back in her head and her hair would be standing on end if she were to witness this production. So I head back to my puzzle. I will prevail; this fabric will not defeat me! ![]() Listening to: Scarlet Pimpernel Reading: Eclipse Bay Weather: sunny, 75 Trivia: What telescopes float on oil? The Gemini North and Gemini South astronomical telescopes float on oil bearings so turning and aiming are very smooth and only require a tiny force. Even though each of these monster telescopes weighs 377 tons, a single person can turn it if the drive motors are not engaged. Gemini North (on Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano) and Gemini South (on Chile's Cerro Pachon) are among the most advanced telescopes in the world, in some ways even outperforming the orbiting Hubble Telescope. Each has an 8.1-meter mirror (more than 26 feet) and is optimized for infrared observations, which will allow astronomers to observe very distant galaxies and penetrate clouds of dust in our own galaxy. Cool word: cornucopia [n. kor-nuh-KO-pee-uh] A cornucopia of something is an overflowing supply of something or an abundance. Near synonyms include: profusion, richness, and wealth. Example: "Surveying the cornucopia of cakes and cookies, Amy was practically drooling." Cornucopia was derived in the early 16th century from the Latin cornu copiae (horn of plenty). The first horn of plenty appears in Greek mythology, and is usually associated with Amalthea who suckled the infant Zeus. Amalthea is alternately a nymph who nursed the god with goat's milk or a she-goat who suckled him. In thanks for this service Zeus is said to have offered a horn filled with fruit that would magically replenish itself. This was the horn of plenty. Cornucopia also describes a cone-shaped ornament used decoratively. It is often shown with fruits or flowers flowing from it to represent abundance.
