Battered and bruised

Let's just say that this week has been hell.

I was absolutely brutalized by a set of parents and their lawyer/advocate in the meeting I was dreading. And the principal just sat there. I finally called a halt to their tirade and made them move the meeting to the actual reason we were getting together, which was to plan for their daughter's first year at the middle school. We've spent months putting together a special program for her and they weren't happy.

It was mind-boggling. They have been given more choices and a special program has been set up for their daughter so that she will get more services than she actually needs, and they complained that there were TOO MANY options!

Give me a break!!

They will end up demanding an outside placement for this kid eventually and she doesn't need that. It was ugly and left me very upset. The fact that the principal just sat there and let me try to control the meeting made me want to puke.

Even now, hours later, I still can't let it go.

To top it all off I had to go to a get together at the principals house after school to honor a couple of the teacher's who are retiring (lucky!) and the principal thought it was funny that I was upset. How's that for support?

I was standing at the top of his deck, putting out potato chips and he says "Hey, good meeting this morning, you did a nice job handling them.

I think my mouth was hanging open as I stared at him and said, "How can you say that? Don’t you see the bruises on me? I was beaten to a pulp!"

his answer?

"Oh it wasn’t that bad, just let it go!"

Easy for him to say, he just sat and let them go on and on!

I'm so glad that the year is ending on Friday.

I've been asked to take part in two research projects this summer, so I won't be totally destitute. It's only about fifteen hours total time, but it's an extra couple of hundred bucks. I've also applied for another two day correcting workshop for the Dept. of Ed and if I get that another couple hundred will be added to the pot.

I actually turned down a plea from an old friend to teach summer school with her. it would only be for a couple hours each morning, but I said no. It would be working with really little kids (preschool age) who have PDD and other types of disabilities, and I think she was upset that I turned her down. It was tempting, due only to the financial piece of it, but I know I shouldn't give in on this.

I KNOW I need a summer of no children. I need a break and need to go back feeling as if I really did have some time off.

I just can’t overspend.

Did I just say that? Me? The shopping queen?

This may be hell!

Trivia: What kinds of insects live in scalding hot water?

There are at least two kinds of flies whose larvae live in hot mineral springs. They are Ephydra brucei, whose larvae live in water above 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44 Centigrade), and Scatella thermarum, whose larvae thrive at 118 F (48 C), a temperature well above the pain threshold for human hands. Ephydra brucei is a tiny black fly. It is a member of the family Ephydridae (the shore flies) whose other members include some of the flies that rise up in black clouds from seaweed at the beach. Its larvae feed on bacteria and algae. Scatella thermarum adults live on and near mats of green algae floating in hot springs in Iceland. Their larvae live in the water below the algae, which flows up out of volcanic springs. They, too, feed on algae and bacteria.

Cool word: happenstance [n. HAP-'n-stans]

When the hero and heroine of a romantic movie have a chance meeting in a coffee shop or coincidentally end up sitting beside each other on a plane, the happy ending that is now guaranteed has been prompted by happenstance. An accidental event, especially one producing a good result, is an example of happenstance. In the late 19th century people apparently decided it took too much time to say that something happened because of a chance circumstance. The resulting amalgamation of happen and circumstance was happenstance. The noun happenchance, which has a similar meaning, was introduced in the late 19th century as well. Other near synonyms include coincidence, fortuity, chance event, and fluke.
