![]() Time Wasted Why is it that I get a long weekend, make a huge list of things to accomplish and then manage to do just about nothing? I started the weekend with high hopes and grandiose ideas and then fizzle. I suppose I should be happy with the little that I did manage to get done. I did a bunch of planting. The front balcony is all set with Supertunias in shades of purple and pink, regular petunias in a couple of shades of blue and purple, and one ivy geranium in a deep pink. The back balcony isn’t quite as happy, as I wasn’t able to find what I wanted. I couldn’t find the color geraniums that I wanted, nor could I find my double petunias or begonias. I ended up buying a bunch of different things that I’ve never tried planting before, so I have no idea how things are going to look or what shades of colors will pop up. Mayble it will end up looking interesting.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I cleaned the carpets here (yes again!). I decided that as long as I had the machine at my disposal I’d re-do those spots where the cat had decided to be bad. I didn’t go as crazy as I did back in February, though. I also got the blood stain out of my mother’s carpet, which was the purpose of having the machine home in the first place. When my father fell he cut his head very badly, and even though both my sister-in-law and I had worked to remove the stain, our efforts didn’t manage to totally get rid of it. This machine did, though. I just couldn’t stand the thoughts of my mother having to look at that spot hour after hour. That puts my heart at ease at least a little bit.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Today I went to lunch with Cathy. She decided that she wanted to take me to lunch rather than send me flowers. It was pleasant, although it was hard to talk. She had a lot to tell me about her ex, though, so the conversation focused on her. That was just as well. I’m still not able to talk much about what’s happened. I’m still worried about that crumble factor. I felt myself starting to well up a couple of different times today, but I caught myself. Funny how those moments can just blindside me. I know I should probably just let go, but I’m not able to do that.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When I came home I worked on some cleaning. Not much though. I fixed a cart that holds stamp and supplies (and managed to take a considerable amount of skin off of my knuckles in the process). And I did manage to do some dusting, but I lost interest. I shouldn’t allow myself to lose interest in that, there’s so much dust around here that you could write volumes on just about any surface. And there’s a huge amount of pollen that’s settled over everything. I still have to put the bedroom back in order, now that the carpet has dried (at least I hope it has!), and I need to figure out what I can wear to school this week. It’s still really cool around here, so it’s hard to figure out what the right thing to wear is. It can be very hot in the school building – mainly because they still have the heat on!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Michael’s birthday is this week. I haven’t even thought about making him a card or sending him anything. Not much chance that will happen during the week either. ![]() Listening to: Learning tapes for the chorus Reading: Acts of Love Judith Michael Weather: 55, partly sunny Trivia: Where are the highest islands in the world? The highest lake with islands larger than a big rock is Orba Co in Tibet. This extreme alpine lake has a surface that is 5,209 meters (17,090 feet) above sea level. Tibet is also known as the "roof of the world." It is a rough, dry, cold plateau north of the Himalayas, the world's highest mountains. It is bitterly cold in the winter and windy all year round. Rain and melted snow drain north into dozens of clear, blue lakes, four of which are considered sacred by local people. There is very little vegetation in the stark, rocky landscape. The only trees are in the most sheltered valleys, and even those are often stunted. Yet for all its barrenness this land can be kind. Humans live near the lakes, where they grow healthy crops during the warm months. Cool word: junket [n. JUNG-kit] A pleasure trip taken at public expense is often called a junket. Since this noun describes a journey or excursion, usually taken by a public official under the guise of official business, it is not something anyone wants to be accused of doing. Example: "The Mayor bristled at the suggestion that his trip to Taiwan was a junket, describing it instead as an economic development initiative." While contemporary usage of this word is almost exclusively in the context of an excursion or outing, junket has a tasty past. Since the 15th century junket has described sweet desserts or other delicate foods. In the 16th century it was broadened to mean a banquet and from there it expanded to its current meaning of pleasure trip. The Middle English jonket (a kind of food served in a rush basket) was derived from Italian guincata (a cream cheese made in a wicker or rush basket). The ultimate root is the Latin juncus for a rush.
