Trivia: How do clownfish avoid the stings of anemones?

Colorful clownfish live among the deadly tentacles of sea anemones. Unlike other fish, which are quickly stung to death and eaten by the anemones, the clownfish are not harmed even when they snuggle deep into the tentacles. From their very first minutes of life, the clownfish cover themselves with a special mucus coating made of a combination of their own secretions and the secretions of the anemone's tentacles. Because they are covered with this coating, they are protected, just as the tentacles are protected from their own stings. Clownfish live in a symbiotic (mutually beneficial) relationship with the anemones. The clownfish are protected from predators, while the anemones are kept clean and protected from fish that eat their tentacles.

Cool word:symbiosis [n. sim-bee-OH-sis]

Symbiosis is a close relationship between two unrelated species of life that is prolonged over many generations. Such a relationship is symbiotic [adj. sim-bee-AW-tik] and a life form in a symbiotic relationship is called a symbiont [n. SIM-bee-ont] or a symbiote [n. SIM-bee-ote]. Most symbiotic relationships benefit both symbionts. An example is the relationship between bees and flowers, in which the bees receive food (nectar and pollen) and the flowers are fertilized. Another example is the relationship between humans and the bacteria in our intestines, which help us digest our food. The word comes from the Latin sumbiosis (companionship) derived from sumbios (living together), which is a compound of syn- (together) and bios (life).

What I ended up having to deal with today was not part of the plan.

I woke up at five this morning (REALLY not in the plan) to discover that not only had the cat thrown up in several spots, but had also had diarrhea in the bathroom. Outside the box.

I cleaned up what I could at the point, then went back to sleep until about eight o’clock. Then I got up to go to the post office to pick up a package that was waiting for me, and to go to the grocery store to get heavy duty disinfectants and carpet cleaners. I washed the bathroom floor five times with this Lysol stuff.

It’s been really icky. I’ve had the windows flung open to make sure the place doesn’t smell. And it’s damn cold out.

I don’t know if he’s really sick, or if this was just a case of having eaten something that didn’t agree with him. I’m waiting to see how he reacts to food today. So far nothing else has happened. Thank God.

I’d be a wreck if he really were sick.

I didn’t manage to get the removable tape that I needed to put up the posters for the set tomorrow. Nor did I get the "King and I" poster enlarged. That’ll have to be done before I leave in the morning.

I did get my nails painted with the blood red stage polish, and managed to pull together my costumes (three different ones, plus the various accessories like earrings and scarves). I found the chorus shoes, and the case with all my stage makeup in it. I’m not sure if the false eyelashes have to be donned tomorrow or not. I’m hoping it’s not. They’re a pain in the neck to deal with.

Keith is nervous about his performance tomorrow. I hope he doesn’t freak out on me. He’s been known to go into panic mode and get really worked up, but I think I’ll be able to keep him calm. I got him a gift certificate from his favorite comic book store as a thank you. That way he can get the Pokemon cards or some new comic books.

I keep thinking that there’s something major that I’ve forgotten to do, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out what it might be.

I plan to get to the auditorium around ten tomorrow morning so I can hang the backdrop and decorate the tables. I’m worried about hanging the backdrop and am praying that the batten system works. (That’s the system that operates the bars that you hang backdrops on.)

If it doesn’t work we’re in deep doo.

I keep thinking I’ll reclaim my life and get more time to myself when the show is over, but I wonder if that is true? I bet I just fill the time with more activity.
