Explanation
Bougainville is an island that is physically and ethnically
close to the Solomon Islands, but is politically part of Papua
New Guinea. This is a result of the accidents of colonial occupation.
Some of the islanders would like indenpendence from PNG. As
the copper mine on their territory is the main source of PNG
government income, the PNG government does not want to see independence,
even though joining the Solomon Islands would make ethnic sense.
