Configuring the ICS Clients

You must configure each of the ICS clients--the other computers that share the ICS connection to the Internet. If you installed the ICS server using the Network Setup Wizard and you chose to create a Network Setup Disk, the Wizard created a floppy disk that contains a version of the Wizard program with which you can configure the ICS clients. The Wizard configures only computers running Windows Me, 9x, 2000, or NT 4. For ICS clients running Windows XP, you can run the Network Setup Wizard that is part of Windows.

When you configure a computer as an ICS client, you add TCP/IP as a network protocol, if it's not already installed, and set the computer to get its IP address from a DHCP server (the one that is running on the ICS server as part of ICS).

Configuring an ICS Client with the Network Setup Wizard

To configure your computer as an ICS client, insert the floppy disk that the Network Setup Wizard created, choose Start | Run, type a:setup, and click Open. Or, if your computer runs Windows XP, choose Start | All Programs | Accessories | Communications | Network Setup Wizard

As the Wizard asks you questions, make these choices:

Testing Your Internet Connection from an ICS Client

When you ask a browser or other Internet program to display a Web page or send or receive e-mail on an ICS client computer, Windows passes your the Internet request along to the ICS server, which connects to the Internet on your behalf. If the ICS server was already logged into the Internet, you should see your Web page or e-mail right away; if the ICS server has to connect, there's the usual delay in logging in. Once the ICS server and clients are configured correctly, users on all ICS servers and clients can use the Internet connection simultaneously.

To test your connection from an ICS server, try these actions:

ICS Client Configuration Details

Here are ways you can check the configuration of your ICS client.

Check that your computer is configured to communicate over the LAN using TCP/IP. Choose Start | Control Panel | Network And Internet Connections | Network Connections to display the Network Connections window. Right-click your Local Area Connection and choose Properties from the menu that appears to display the Properties dialog box for the LAN connection.

On the General tab, check that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) appears and is selected so that your computer can communicate via TCP/IP on the LAN. If the TCP/IP entries don't appear, install TCP/IP by clicking the Install button, choosing Protocol, clicking the Add button, choosing TCP/IP from the list of network protocols, and clicking OK. Also make sure that the QoS Packet Scheduler appears and is selected.

Make sure that your computer is configured to get its IP address from the DHCP server that runs on the ICS server. On the General tab of the Local Area Connections Properties dialog box, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) on the list of installed components and click the Properties button to display the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. On the General tab, select Obtain An IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically.

Check the TCP/IP settings on the ICS client by opening the Network Connections window, right-clicking the Local Area Connection, and choosing Status from the menu that appears. Click the Support tab, shown here:

The settings should be the same as those in this illustration, except for the IP Address, which may end with a number other than 2.

Check to see that your computer is not configured to connect to the Internet directly. Choose Start | Control Panel, click Network And Internet Options, and click Internet Options. On the Connections tab of the Internet Properties dialog box, select either Never Dial A Connection or Dial Whenever A Network Connection Is Not Present. (If no connections appear in the Dial-Up And Virtual Private Network Settings box, the Never Dial A Connection setting is gray, but it's still selected.)

Click the LAN Settings button on the Connections tab of the Internet Properties dialog box to display the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box, shown here:

These are settings you might need to use if you connect to the Internet using a proxy server other than ICS. None of the check boxes should be selected, unless your LAN administrator specifies otherwise.
