Chapter Introduction

Windows stores its configuration information in a variety of files of different formats, including files for configuring Windows itself, as well as for running Windows and DOS programs. Windows comes with the System Configuration Utility (or Msconfig, for short) to help make controlled changes to some of its configuration files. This chapter explains the configuration files used by Windows XP, as well as how to run the System Configuration Utility program. The last section offers some pointers for running both Windows and another operating system (such as UNIX or Linux) on the same computer.
