GENERAL INFORMATION |
|
The Island of Tiree (known in Gaelic as ‘tir-lodh’ - the land of the corn) forms part of Scotland’s Inner Herbrides and is approximately 10 miles long and 4 miles wide in parts. The Island has a population of between 800 - 900 people.
Tiree is located to the west of the Island of Mull and just south of the Island of Coll. The Island is renowned for it’s good weather, and is officially one of the sunniest places in Britain, thanks to it’s position on the Gulf Stream. The Island is also a windy place, which, along with it’s white sandy beaches and waves makes it a haven for windsurfers.
The Island is relatively flat and has a great deal of farming land. Few trees grow on Tiree due to the wind. The underlying rock on the Island, lewisian gneiss is said to be 2900 million years old, half as old as the earth itself.
Scarinish is the Islands main township and this is where the ferry arrives. Facilities in Scarinish include a supermarket, bank, garage, post office, police station, gift shop and cafe. South from Scarinish is Crossapoll where you will also find a general store and garage.
As mentioned before, Tiree is relatively flat which makes it ideal for those who like cycling. The whole Island generates an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Another bonus is that there are no midges to spoil your fun.
