Avalon
Avalon is (or was) an island off of the northern coast of Ireland. Most of the knowledge of this ancient land has been forgotten. We know that the land was separated from our world some time before or during the middle ages. Avalon was the land to which King Arthur traveled to heal from is wounds: 'Then the three queens received him, and he laid his head upon the lap of one of them, who cried
"Alas! dear brother why have ye tarried so long for your wound hath taken cold?"
With that the barge put from land, and when Sir Benivere saw it departing, he cried with a bitter cry, "Alas! my lord King Arthur what shall become of me now ye have gone from me?"
"Comfort ye," said King Arthur, "and be strong, for I may no more help ye. I go to the Vale of Avalon to heal me of my grievous wound, and if ye see me no more, pray for my soul,"
Then the three queens kneeled down around the king and sorely wept and wailed, and the barge went forth to sea, and departed slowly out of Sir Bedivere's sight. (King Arthur and His Knights by Sir James Knowles, pg 382 and 383)
Sadly, the great King only met Death in Avalon; hence, he is buried on the Isle of Graves.
The main land of Avalon is surrounded by many small islets. Many are so small that they are completely overlooked by most mapmakers. On either side of the island, there are two lands of which no one remembers their orgins or how long they have been populated. The Eastern and Western Lands existed long before Avalon appeared within their world and randomly placed between them.
Politics
Avalon is ruled by a Royal Family, a singular family of High Elves who are masters of Power. The first born child (whether girl or boy) is trained to ascend to the throne. They will receive intense training so that they will be prepared for any situation. The Royal Family is also in possession of the Sacred Jewel (look here) which is considered one of the most Powerful item ever created. The Royal Family has almost unlimited Power, and are nearly immortal. They can only die if their heads are cut off and the body is burned. The King and Queen stay in power until their successor is grown and is married. At that time they step down from the thrown, and the new King and Queen take control. The purpose of this is to ensure monarchs will not stay in power for too long.
The second most powerful family is called the Guardian Family. They are a small family of a race of Immortals called Lorilei. The Guardian Family are sworn to protect and wield the most Powerful object of all: the Scepter of Avalon. They are considered second in command of Avalon. One of the Guardian Family is chosen to be the 'Barer of the Scepter' or informally called 'Scepter Barer'. The privilege of being 'Scepter Barer' is decided by the Scepter itself. The individual choosen is considered the only person (besides the King and Queen of Avalon) to be able to wield the Scepter in battle. The Guardian Family is less Powerful then the Royal Family, and for that reason they are frequently attacked. By the decree of King Vescath the Wise (and quite a bit of Gold) the famous and inaccessable Guardian's Mansion was built. A practical maze full of booby traps, Power, and secret passages makes the Mansion vitually impossible to penatrate.
