History of Curling in Eriksdale
Eriksdale Community Ice Gardens Curling came to Erikdale with the “Eriksdale Ice Gardens” that held 2 sheets of curling ice. If you wanted to curl back then you put your name in a hat and the rinks were drawn from there. The skips were chosen more by there knowledge of the game as opposed to there playing level. Those who had no knowledge of the game or experience were more than welcome to join in as well, often as lead.

With the burning of the old rink came the building of the 3 sheets of ice we have now. In the beginning the building was not heated or insulated, this didn’t take place until the 70’s. Around 1976 the curling club, after more fundraising installed the ice plant.

the rink befor it was insulated The curling club used to operate under the community club with profits from fee’s, bonspiels and the like deposited into the community club accounts. In the late 1980’s the curling club branched out on it’s own although still donating to the community club to take care of the maintenance of the building and the hydro.

The curling club has seen many improvements over the last couple decades; including separating curling lounge from the rotunda, and changing the old figure skating dressing room into curling change room.

Men’s, Ladies, Carnival and mixed bonspiels are held every year. The men’s bonspiel in the 60’s was particularly successful with about 60-83 entry’s the skating rink was converted into five sheets of ice. Curing took place around the clock and many curlers slept at the rink. All for the grand prize of a fruit basket.

the rink befor it was insulated In recent years the amount of young curlers has sky rocketed going from about 25 students in 1996,to about 75 students in 2005. A large part of this renewed interest is due to one teacher, Brad Drews. There are about 40 people in lady’s and men’s league curling. Fee’s have been kept reasonable through out the years and prizes have gotten much better.

The Eriksdale Curling club has also been responsible for a number of changes at the rink including the bar upstairs (donated by Lorne Boss) as well as the extention of the curling lounge.

In a time where curling clubs across Canada are struggling the Eriksdale curling club is deffenatly a sucess story, made possable by a dedicated group of volenteers.
