* Friday: I tried to put together a *quality* event for my former schooltime lunch buddies. Got no support from 'em, the dastards.... [See Tricia's Facebook wall.]
* Saturday: Met up with Bill in Fredneck. Spoke with the former mayor of Burkittsville, MD (setting of "Blair Witch Project"). Bought a book at the old German Reformed Church—a historical society book sale. Ate at Windy Hill Restaurant—had a waitress out of central casting (no, not Katie).
Dessert at Antietam Dairy, Waynesboro: one scoop honey lavendar [their spelling] and one scoop of oreo chocolate mint in a sugar cone. All food was my older brother's treat—nice! Took my evening constitutional.
* Sunday: Church in morn. Read two short stories by A. E. Coppard to preview a 1951 compilation as a gift for Ben's daughter, Liana. Then on hay ride at 4 pm with cookout/ pot latch afterwards. [Little "h" little "r," so don't spaz on me, Brigitte.] Sat around the camp fire, then home to watch Inspector Lewis.
* Monday: Got up late. Spoke with possible employer, but poo-pooed it (1 hour, 6 minute commute, one way—more sales than marketing).
Quick on the Net to write happy b-day to Corey, then a hike.

"Sunday, 18 October: Warmer, with Cold Souls" [first posted on Monday, 19 October 2009 at 12:50 pm]
* Sunday: Church. Lunch at the place. Then went up to Blue Ridge Summit and dropped down to Cascade, taking MD 550 to Thurmont. Library there... then drove to Fredneck, parking on College Avenue. Walked to library there and finished up my business.
Followed signs to Ryan Homes Clover Ridge, and by luck, found my friend Trish.
Then buzzed by Holiday Cinemas—all movies I'd seen or didn't wanna see.
So up to Gettysburg on US 15—operating in slipstream mode, as everyone was going 75 or 80 m.p.h. free parking on Sunday, and no tourists to block my route. Arrived with 10 minutes to spare at the Gettysburg Majestic. Saw Cold Souls with Paul Giamatti. After thinking about it, Paul Giamatti was a good choice to play "Paul Giamatti."
An artsy (indie) film--maybe much like Being John Malkovich, which made me think Kristen Simmons would want to see this movie.
Do I recommend? It takes a lot to make me hate a movie. I will write that one has to wade out pretty far before this movie starts to connect. That the movie is about feeling disconnected explains that in part. It gets better when they leave the U.S.—then "Paul" interacts more.
I'd say at least good for a rental on a rainy day when one wants something a little different. You may want to pass on having chick peas for dinner though. ;-)

"24 & 25 October" [posted on Monday, 26 October 2009 at 2:21 pm]
* Saturday: hit the Fayetteville, then the Chambersburg libraries. Then went to Rita's, where I briefly played conservative Meathead to her much-more diplomatic father while she got ready. Although the goal was Nikko Japanese Steak & Seafood, we were looking in the wrong part of town. Then we looked in the right part of town, but didn't see it. Meanwhile, we were looking for a certain Regina Spektor CD—first in the Valley Mall at FYE. Other stores in the Mall also were looked into, with Rita blowing more than $100 in the Waldenbooks, which was closing down.
We ended up eating in the Food Court's Teryaki Temple. I had teryaki beef with rice—my beef was pretty gristly. Rita had the chicken.
After checking out movie times, we left for Borders out by Walmart. The CD was found, and then we looked all around the store.
* Sunday: church, then a nice lunch afterwards in the Social Room. Soups—I chose ham chowder, and man, it was good! Went back for a bowl of chili, then dessert.
Headed over to Whitetail to see about their weekend festival. First time I went into the place, but didn't stay. Instead, saw some nice foliage as I headed down to the Museum of Fine Arts. I listened to the Recorder Consort performance while there.
Then got some petrol and headed to Rita's. Walked the Township Park as she got ready. Was treated to a fine meal at Hagerstown's Outback (including a blooming onion), then we killed time in Toys R Us, Michaels, and Target until the 8:15 showing of Surrogates at Valley Mall.
Everything was good....

"All Hallows Days" (Saturday, 31 October; Sunday, 1 November, and Monday, 2 November 2009)
* Halloween (Saturday): Rode around talking with my brother Bill, then dinner at Foot of the Mountain Restaurant: chicken parmesan, mashed potatoes with the mysterious green gravy (but good), and corn fritters. (Am I going native?) Apple cake for dessert.
New (to me) Doc Martin at 10 pm.
* All Saints Day (Sunday): Brunch, then church. Traveled to Shippensburg, ended up raking leaves with Gail at the Culbertson residence. Back to Greencastle, then dinner with Rita. Had Beef Chow Fun—everybody have chow fun tonight—with a vegetable egg roll. Afterwards, we went to see Astro Boy. Right good.
* All Soul's Day (Monday): Throat a little scratchy. Sent off an app—it went so well two years ago—found at Yahoo Mail's search is not working—nor is Facebook's pics. Gonna buy a loaf of bread, then off to Fayetteville.

"Scrambling: Friday, 6 November; Saturday, 7 November; and Sunday, 8 November 2009"
* Friday: after but a wee bit of computer access, I headed up to Shippensburg's SHAPE Gallery for their monthly opening. A bit irritated at their jumping Christmas this early, even though there was merit in the bluesy holiday songs they were playing in the background.
Talked to no one new, but did learn of a Raku resist method after seeing it used on a couple of works there.
A nice spread of refreshments of which of course I partook, then home early.
* Saturday: no movie caught Rita's eye, so we merely ate at Wendy's and called it a night. The Doc Martin was new.
* Sunday: brunch in, church, lunch in. Then did my long walk around Greencastle—"long" in that I also took in Tayamentasachta. Then drove over to Township Park and walked the new drives there. Followed Manito Bridge Trail back the ravine to Martin's Mill Bridge Park, then walked over that 1849 covered bridge.
Instead of taking the road back, I opted for the Challenge Trail. The challenge was: 1. no trail was visible, at least under leaves. 2. Said leaves were dry and made the steep hill slippery. 3. Acorns acted like ball bearings on the hill.
This was dumb idea—but at half way up, it'd be worse to turn back. I'd rather climb a slippery hill than descend it—and my fear of heights plays little in that. I ascended like someone doing some martial arts maneuver, at least to middle. I then had to almost crawl—grab with my hands onto rocks, roots, and limbs to pull myself up.
Near the top, I could once again stand, but then the problem was finding my way through briars. The bulldozer used to clear a field made a hedgerow that was impregnable to cross, so more briars. Leaflets three were less of a concern.
But finally made it to the top, and onto Turkey Run Trail, and out to the clearing. Went over to Rita's to wash my hands and get some water. Then watched her cut 500 strings from yarn for the church popcorn ball initiative. Counted over 100 strings for her—I hate counting.
Then left and walked a little more in the park, then headed over to church with her to deliver the strings.
We ate in the local McDonalds, watching Fox News.
We parted, and I went home to watch Masterpiece Contemporary.
