Michael Healey's picture

  Michael Healey

Researching my German, Irish and American roots...

My great-great-grandfather, Michael Healey, was born in Ireland about 1805-1806. He emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Clinton County, Indiana. On May 31, 1856 he purchased 103 acres of farmland from John & Sarah Nier for $1000. 1856 Deed

Michael Healey married Rebecca Price (b. abt. 1835 in Somerset, Pulaski County, KY) in Clinton County on Sep 7, 1856. Their first children--twins, Spencer Earl and Niher, were born on Jun 8, 1857. (Could Sarah Nier (similarity to Niher) have been Michael's sister, or John a cousin?) A daughter, (Nora) Christena, was born about 1858.

Michael Healey died around 1868-1869. Rebecca died about the same time and probably prior to Michael's death. This conclusion is drawn from the fact that court records indicate Rebecca's brother, William Price, filed for and was appointed Spencer's guardian following Michael's death (Petition for Letters of Guardianship dated 2-12-1869. Spencer actually lived with the William Price family several years before guardianship was petitioned according to court documents filed by William Price.) Settlement (.pdf file - requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) of Spencer Healey's estate and release of William Price from his guardianship responsibilities was concluded on October 8, 1878.

Rebecca's father, Spencer Price, and her brother, Timothy C. Price, are buried in Hills Cemetery, Kirklin, IN. Both died near in time and vicinity to Michael and Rebecca Healey, based on headstone inscriptions and recorded deeds.

The whereabouts of Niher is uncertain beyond the 1860 Clinton County census' record of him. Due to the transference of the family property to Spencer on March 24, 1860, 1860 Deed "in consideration of the natural love and affection which Michael Healey and Rebecca Healy bear to their son...," it is presumed Niher may have died in infancy. (There is no evidence of guardianship or a subsequent census accounting of him.)

Christena's whereabouts during this transitional phase adds yet another twist to the fragmented story and puzzling mystery. A Nora Hella married Edward Wright in Clinton County, Indiana on Oct 9, 1877; research indicates this is very likely our 'Nora' Christena. (She would have become a ward of guardians at a very early age, as was her brother Spencer, following the deaths of their parents. The 1870 Clinton County, IN Census for Sugar Creek Township adds some credence to that presumption in that there is a listing for a Nora Heely, age 13, living with the James & Delila McKinney family. James McKinney's parents came from Pulaski Co. KY, as did Rebecca Price (Healey) and her family. Additional support for the conclusion that Nora Hella and Nora Heely are in fact the same Christena Healey is drawn from the knowledge that the Wrights (Edward & Nora) migrated to IL and then to Sedgewick, AR, with the Spencer Healey family.

Spencer Earl Healey married Nancy Ellen Duskey (b. Oct 18, 1861) in Clinton County, Indiana on Jan 10, 1878. Marriage Certificate Spencer and Nancy had nine children between 1879 and 1895. In 1879-1880 they moved to Tipton County, Indiana and, as noted in the preceding paragraph, eventually migrated to Arkansas. Nancy died in Sedgwick, Arkansas on Jan 4, 1929. She is buried at Old Military Cemetery near Sedgwick. After Nancy's death Spencer moved to Leachville, AR and lived with his son, Lee. Spencer, at eighty years of age, died in Leachville, Arkansas on Jun 28, 1940. He is buried in Box Elder Cemetery, in rural Manila, AR.

Quite a bit of material has been found in court documents regarding the guardianship of Spencer Healey. Much of it involved the sale of property, in rather piecemeal manner, to cover property taxes, court-mandated guardian duties (filing annual accountings) and typical reimbursements for maintaining a ward.

Michael and Rebecca's descendants have dispersed across the country over the years since the 1880-1890s. Where are they now? I'm working on it. Any help you could provide would certainly be appreciated.
