Shenandoah Jct. east bounder around 8:30 on Dec. 29, 2001. Our last
train outing of 2001.
|
The Junction is located north of Charles Town, WV. Take Rt. 9 to Martinsburg
on the east side of town. Make a right on Rt. 20 at the school. Make a left at the
tracks (NS). Go to the CSX tracks and go right and under the NS tracks.
Just beyond the
concrete block building turn left and park near the tracks.
|
The same east bound as above but closer. We saw a CSX train an hour from
about 9:30 until we left at 3:30. This was a Saturday which seems to be one of the
better days on this CSX line. We also saw 3 NS trains.
|
A west bounder begins to snake through the S curves at the junction.
This was an interchange point for CSX and NS. But the turnout was removed
resently so they no longer interchange here. I believe that is now done in
Hagerstown, MD.
Another progressive
view.
|
Same train but close up. The day was cold and windy with frequent
clouds. We spent a lot of time sitting in the car. The scanner is only a little
help on CSX west bounds. The east bounds can be heard blowing for grade crossings
at least 5 minutes before arriving.
|
NS north bound to Hagerstown and then probably Harrisburg. This was a
mixed freight. We saw a container train but I missed the shot. Bummer!!
|
NS empty coal drag heads south. This time of year the light doesn't
hold well here. Even in the Summer months one must move to the other side of the
bridge in the later afternoon. Eventually you can only shoot NS and westbound
CSX. Probably do better to move elsewhere on the line by then.
