Wapta Falls is in Yoho National Park about 20 miles south of Field on Rt 1. One must hike down to the falls, but it is certainly worth the trip. |
Wapta Falls We stayed in Field for a few days to work this area. This is where our Ford Focus rental car died. Fortunatly it died at the Kicking Horse Inn where we were staying and not out in the sticks where we had been hiking. By the way, the inn is right on the CP tracks. You can watch trains from your window if you are on the second floor in the back. It is a crew change spot so most trains stop there. The park visitor's center is also in Field. |
The Natural Bridge is on the Kicking Horse River in Yoho NP about 5 min. from Field. This is quite spectacular and popular. Yoho is Cree Indian for an expression of awe and wonder. These parks all fall into that catagory. |
Lake Louise is in Banff National Park east of Field. The name goes with the little village and the lake. The magnificant Chateau Lake Louise hotel is also there. It one of several beautiful hotels built by the CP railway in the late 1800's to attract tourists. The hotels are still owned by the railroad. A cheap room is about $600 a night US. We didn't stay there, but we enjoyed the walk through. Of course it is raining in this photo. |
Moraine Lake is a short drive from Lake Louise. As with most of the landscape, the lake was created by a glacier. There are hiking trails around all these areas. The only problem we had was bears. Authorities limited hiking in some areas due to bear attacks. In some areas you had to have at least six people in your party to hike. |
Takakkaw Falls is about 10 miles from Field in Yoho. The word means "magnificent" in Cree. It drops about 900 feet. There is a short hike to get to the falls from the parking area. |
W. Lake Louise is just east of Field. The is a small lodge here where you can eat, sleep and fuel up with a nice view. I liked it because of the rail activity. |
Cathedral Mountain is near W. Lake Loiuse and Field. The west bound railway crews call the signal here before they drift into Field. This is at the Spiral Tunnel parking area. The tunnels were built by the CP so trains could more easily climb the mountains. |
Bow Lake is on the Icefields Parkway (Rt. 93) going from Lake Louise north to Jasper and Jasper National Park. It is a spectacular drive even in the rain. Bow Summit is the highest point on the parkway at 6849'. |
Peyto Lake is just a mile from Bow Lake. We got out and climbed up the mountain to get this shot. Most of the water has this color to it. It is due to the powdered rock suspended in the water. |
Athabasca Glacier is on the Icefields Parkway halfway between Lake Louise and Jasper in Jasper National Park. It is part of the Columbia Icefield. The glacier area is huge and there is a large visitor's center there. One can take a bus tour out onto the glacier. Unfortunatly, this is not a picture of the main glacier. It was ruined when the camera leaked light. The glacier has been receding for several years. It is possible that soon it will not exist. |
Tangle Creek Falls is right along the highway. It is one of many. There are
lots of places to stop, look and hike on the parkway. Go To PAGE 3 |
