Let's start with Raystown Lake. This is the Army Corps
of Engineers campground and they have done a great job. Our visit was in May so there
are no leaves yet. It is also not crowded. This is a boaters paradise so getting a spot
in the Summer is difficult. Some sites can be reserved and some are first come-first served.
But you better get there early. But I mean early in the week. If you wait until Friday,
you'll be outa luck. Check in time is 5PM.
Check out campsite 153 in the
Seven Points campground. Here is the view from the back window of our 5er. Site 152 is great as well. Nice view of the lake out the back window of your RV. There
is electric at some sites. This great destination is south of Huntingdon, PA off Rt. 26.
Next on the list is another state park in the north west area of PA. This is near Cook
Forest. That's where we camped for this trip. Kinzua Viaduct
State Park was a great destination. Unfortunately the viaduct was
destroyed by a tornado or high winds in July 2003. The park is closed as of this date.
The future of the viaduct is uncertain. We reached it by riding the Knox and Kane Railroad.
I suspect their business is off a bit.
Another destination easily reached from Cook Forest is the
Drake Oil Well Museum. It is in a scenic location and
there is a hiking trail and train ride nearby. We spent the better part of a day here and
thoroughly enjoyed it. Showed all about the oil industry both past and present.
Now let's go to the central part of the state to
Ricketts Glen State Park. Here is one of the
22 named waterfalls. One hikes down one side of the creek and up the other. Its about
a 4 miler if I recall. We stayed at Frances Slocum some 30 miles east because that
campground had electric. Both parks are just west of Scranton. Slocum has hiking, a
pool, a lake and other attractions.
A little farther east and south is
French Creek. This park has a nice campground, pool, 2 lakes, a disc golf course,
boat rentals, orienteering course and plenty of hiking. Plenty to keep one busy for
several days, at least. This is the spillway out of one of the lakes. The orienteering
course goes around the lake. We had fun with it. Wife used the map and I used a compass.
