The Lanhams of Maryland and the District of Columbia Compiled by Dr. Howard G. Lanham
Maryland and District of Columbia Lanham Census Summary
The following is a summary of the ages and locations of the total number of people in Lanham households in the period from 1790-1900. Using census material as a source is difficult. Errors and omissions are common. Overall trends are interesting. For example, Lanhams all but disappear from Montgomery and Frederick Counties and at the same time individuals claiming to have been born in those counties appear in Kentucky and Ohio. Still it is very difficult to prove relationships using pre-1850 census data. I am grouping people from the later census data into the narrow age categories of the original 1790 census for the purpose of comparison. The age categories change in 1830 such that the ages of what I call adult and juvenile vary. Prior to 1830 juvenile males are under 16, but beginning in 1830 they are under 20. The spelling of the surname may vary, but in most cases the individual is known to me as a Lanham. In a few cases I am uncertain about counting the individual as a Lanham because there are no other mentions and the handwriting is difficult to read.

There are two households in 1830. One (Fielding Lanham) is clearly a Lanham. The other name Ann L. L---- is hard to read and may be another surname.

The household of Thomas C. Lanham seems to appear twice in 1840. I count it once.
