The Lanhams of Maryland and the District of Columbia
Compiled by Dr. Howard G. Lanham
The following site contains lists of primary source mentions of persons named Lanham living in the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia (once part of Maryland). It is not a genealogy as such since there are many mentions that might belong to one of several people with the same name and since many of the mentions give no clue to the relationship between the individual and other Lanhams.

NOTES:
- Basil Hatton (August 8, 1760-August 5, 1840) was a son of Joseph Haton and Mary Weston and a Revolutionary War veteran. His relationship with the Lanhams is uncertain, but in the 1820 census several Hatton households are near that of Cloe Lanham.
- This is a significant record. There is no direct proof that Ralph Lanham or Edward Lanham were sons of John Lanham, the immigrant. This record establishes that John Palmer, Jr., who married Mary Lanham (daughter of John Lanham, Jr.) was related in some way to Ralph and so was Edward Lanham. It also associates Ralph with two other descendants of John Lanham, who were his creditors. A simple theory would be that Ralph and Edward were both sons of John Lanham the immigrant. An unsupported but nonetheless commonly accepted claim is that Edward Lanham was a son of Josias Lanham, who settled in Kent County, Maryland. The individual who first made this association did not offer any primary source verification for the claim (see William Joseph Lanham, "The Lanham Family's Seventeenth-Century Origins from Maryland's Eastern Shore" Maryland Historical Magazine Volume 81 (Spring 1986):91). There is no endnote citing a source.
- This date of death for Robert H. Lanham does not agree with the one appearing in the December 8, 1845 issue of the Baltimore Republican and Daily Argus Newspaper (Died November 30, 1845) or with that appearing in William H. Piles manuscript December 2, 1845. It is curious that so many different dates exist and difficult to decide which is correct.
