Concentration
In order to develop mind power it it first necessary to
Control the mind. Training the mind can be compared to the
disciplining of a spoiled child: when one attempts to change
its fights, rebels. Its chief weapon is to make one weary
so that the desire to practice dies out. Concentration
aids in disciplining the mind and in learning to focus its
unconscious powers to realize our aims. There are various
techniques of concentration that can be helpful in mind
control:
1. By simply sitting down quietly at least once each
day for just three minutes and fixing our eyes upon a pleasant
object and contemplating it without distraction the process of
integration within our minds will automatically begin. It
is best to measure the three minutes with a stopwatch in order
to avoid distraction. The moment the mind tries to wander
away from the object we are looking at we must gently try
to bring it back to the subject. The ingenious deception
and trickery the ordinary mind is capable of become quite
obvious during this exercise. We may suddenly find ourselves
growing restless, may develop an itch or a sudden headache,
anything, so long as it makes us lose concentration and
allow the mind its aimless freedom. This we must try to
control if we wish to stop being slaves of our own thoughts.
2. Concentrating on a candle is another way to bring the
mind under control. It is a most relaxing technique that
works both inwardly in the mind and outwardly in the body.
The person sits cross-legged on the floor and places a lighted
candle approximately three feet away, then stares at the flame
for about two minutes. After this period he presses the
palms of his hands against his close eyes. The images of
the flame will remain in the imagination. The person must
concentrate all his efforts on this mental image of the
flame for an additional two minutes. Each time the flame
disappears he must try to bring it back without opening his
eyes. This exercise is very soothing and good for establishing
control over the mind.
3. After the mind has been exercised as described in
the first two techniques it is time to test its power on others.
Focus the eyes upon the back of somebody's head, preferably
a perfect stranger's in a crowed place. As the eyes concentrate
on this person's head mentally command him to turn around
and look at the person issuing the command. Invariably, if
mind control is good this person will turn around restlessly
and his eyes will wander around the place for some seconds
before stopping momentarily and almost questioningly on the
one calling on his mind.
The concentration techniques are the first steps taken
before attempting to acquire meterial things through still
another technique, known as visualization.
