Part Seven: Buffy
I'm with Riley when the message comes from Giles to call Los Angeles. In an UN-Giles like fashion he gives me almost no information but tells me it is of the utmost importance. When I hang up the phone, Riley is right there with me asking me if everything's okay. It's rare that Giles calls me when I'm here. He knows Riley time is Buffy time and only extreme emergencies are allowed to interrupt me.
"Is everything okay?" Riley asks me, concern clouding his face almost instantly.
"I'm not sure," I say. "He told me to call LA."
"What in LA?"
"A couple friends."
"Oh,"
I can tell he wants to know more but doesn't ask me to elaborate.
"I'll leave the room if you want to make a call." He tells me then.
I smile at him, my sweet, sweet Riley. "You don't have to leave. But I have to make the call."
He nods and then returns to the bed. I make up my mind then that after I find out what this grand emergency is, I'm going to jump onto that bed with him and thank him properly for being so wonderful.
I dial the number of Angel's office. Cordelia answers the phone on the third ring. "Hello."
"Cordy, it's me."
"Buffy! I've been trying to get in touch with you for days. Do me a favor please and stop the touchy feely nasty stuff that will send our nice little Angel vampire's soul into oblivion crap and send him back here."
"Cordy, what are talking about?"
"I need Angel to come back to LA. We're swamped. I've got schizo demons off the deep end
here!"
"Cordy, he left over a week ago."
"What?"
"He left. There was nothing he could do. He left."
"Well he hasn't come here."
"He hasn't called or anything?"
"Uh, no. Or else I wouldn't be calling you looking for him."
I feel unease rise from my stomach and into my throat and I have the sudden urge to vomit. I toss the phone down onto the floor and make a B-line towards Riley's bathroom. As I hurl into the blue porcelain bowl, I feel Riley next to me, gently pulling my hair back away from my face...
