Season One

Pilot
The riders join the Pony Express. The group of riders includes the Kid, a young man from Virginia who becomes the groups unofficial leader, Buck Cross who feels torn between the white mans world and the Indian world because of his mixed heritage, Lou McCloud who is a very secretive young "man", William F. Cody, the jokester of the group and an excellent marksman, Ike McSwain, a mute who communicates through the use of Indian sign language, and James Hickok, a hot-headed young man who is good with a gun. Teaspoon Hunter, an ex-Texas ranger, is the station's manager. Emma Shannon is the station's housekeeper and cook. Sam Cain is the Marshall of the town of Sweetwater. Teaspoon trains the riders and teaches them his "bag of tricks." A bunch of outlaws are on the loose. They shot Lou at a way station that they robbed. While to tending Lou's wound, Kid finds out that Lou is really Louise. He agrees to keep Lou's secret. The riders go after the outlaws and capture them. The outlaws escape and go after Kid while on a mail run. Kid kills the outlaws in self-defence. Kid escapes injury, but his horse Katy gets shot in the leg. Fortunately, Sam Cain who was tracking the outlaws, finds them and saves Katy's life. Kid and Lou share their first kiss in this episode.

The Gunfighter
Jimmy angers a bullyish hired gun named Longly after he unintentionlly spooks Longly's horse. Emma tries to convince Longly to leave Jimmy alone but Longly ends up forcing Jimmy into a gunfight. Jimmy shoots and kills Longly and he gets the watch back that Longly had taken from Emma, and gives it back to her.

Speak No Evil
With the Kiowa on the war path, Buck feels that he must choose between his allegiance to the Pony Express and his kinship with the Kiowa tribe. Buck quits the Express and leaves after a visit with his brother, Red Bear. After Ike gets kidnapped by the Kiowa, Buck goes to rescue his best friend. The Indians release Ike and they put Buck through a 'test' to proove that he is still worthy of his Kiowa blood. Buck rejoins the Express.

Home of the Brave
Ike witnesses a stagecoach massacre. He must testify against the gang's leader in court. The gang tries to silence Ike before he can testify. They try to prevent the riders from getting to Blue Creek where the trial is being held, and they kidnap Buck. Buck gets rescued just in time for Ike to identify the outlaw.

Bad Blood
Lou returns to the orphanage to visit her brother, Jeremiah and her sister, Theresa. Her estranged father, a gunrunner named Boggs, gets to them first, and Lou must rescue them. The other riders find out that Lou is a girl when she is confronted by her father and he calls her "Louise." Boggs tries to kill Lou but he gets shot and killed by Kid before he has the chance to shoot Lou. After returning Jeremiah and Theresa safely to the orphanage, the other riders agree to keep Lou's secret so she can continue to ride for the Express.

Black Ulysses
The riders try to protect a runaway slave named Ulysses from a Missouri state militiaman committed to bringing down the fugitive. Ulysses claims he killed a slave owner who murdered his mother. The riders and the townspeople of Sweetwater scare off the militiamen. Ulysses, who is now a free man, goes off to make a life for himself.

Ten-Cent Hero
After angering a dime novelist at the saloon, the novelist, J.D. Markus writes a fictional book about Jimmy calling him Wild Bill Hickok. This causes trouble for Jimmy who ends up having to have a showdown with a gunfighter that Jimmy was rumored to have killed. This episode marks the beginning of Jimmy's reputation as Wild Bill Hickok.

False Color
Kid enjoys a reunion with his brother, Jed, who seems to have found his niche in the U.S. Army. However, Jed is really leading a gang that is posing as US soldiers to steal gold for the budding Confederacy. When Jed's true intentions are revealed, Kid is forced to choose sides and go against his brother. When Jed's gang tries to steal the gold, a gunfight insues and Jed is killed by Jimmy when Jed attampts to kill Kid who was trying to stop his brother from escaping.

Good Day to Die
Kid finds a young warrior named Curly at the scene of a way-station massacre and assumes that Curly is responsible for the massacre. Although, Curly denies any wrongdoing, Kid hauls him back through Indian territory to face justice in Sweetwater. They are temporarly held captive by an Indian tribe and are released by an Indian maiden who used to belong to Curly's tribe. Curly's innocence is proven when Lou and Jimmy find out that the Indian agent is the one who has been causing all the trouble and blaming the Indians.

End of Innocence
Jimmy discovers that he has hidden feelings for Emma while on a venture to an Army outpost to visit a friend of Emma's. The outpost is commanded by a captain with a passion for cruelity. The captain is eventually arrested for breaking the treaty and killing innocent woman and children at an Indian village. While at Fort Reunion, Emma tells Jimmy about her past life when her husband abandoned her and she lost her baby.

Blind Love
Jimmy's heart is lassoed by a mysterious woman mamed Sarah. He is caught in a dangerous triangle when Sarah and another man try to frame Jimmy for murdering her husband. Lou and Kid find evidence to clear Jimmy's name.

The Keepsake
Teaspoon is given clain to a small fortune, but he may lose it to a young woman who he thinks is his daughter, Elizabeth, and a crooked gambler who is willing to kill for the cash. The woman, who is really called Amanda, has a change of heart once she gets to know the kind man that Teaspoon really is. After defeating the crooked gambler, Amanda and Teaspoon use the money to go into business together as owners of a saloon.

Fall From Grace
Jimmy has what appears to be a falling out with Teaspoon. He goes to work for Grace, the owner of a brothel. Jimmy makes friends with a young girl named Amy. It is later revealed that Jimmy was actually working undercover for the Army to investigate Grace's illegal activities involving Army guns and ammunition.

Hard Time
Kid is sentenced to do hard time with a prison chain gang on a trumped-up charge by a small-town sheriff carrying out policies of the sadistic man who keeps the town under a cloud of fear. The riders and Sam rescue Kid and the other prisoners who had also been held under trumped-up charges.

Lady For A Night
Lou dresses like a lady and has dinner with a charming man named Tyler Dewitt who developes an obsession with her. Emma informs Lou that she has known Lou's secret from the beginning. She gives Lou a coming-out party and invites the other riders. The Pony Express is expericening robberies and Lou finds out that Tyler is responsible for the robberies. When she confronts Tyler, he kidnaps her. Kid and Sam rescue her. Meanwhile, Jimmy has a bad tooth and he behaves like a big baby about it. The other riders literally have to force him to go to the dentice. The dentice barely touches the tooth before Jimmy pulls his gun on him. Jimmy eventually pulls the tooth himself.

Unfinished Business
After surviving a massacre of wealthy settlers near Salt Lake, Emma's estranged husband, Evan Crandal arrives in Sweetwater. The riders and Sam are suspicious of him. Their suspicions are confirmed when they find out that Evan was involved in the massacre. Evan ends up being killed by members of his gang.

Decoy
On a wild ride to deliver a top-secret Government message, Cody helps a mortally wounded man, who asks Cody to care for his pet bear, Bart. Cody also defends a widowed woman from claim jumpers who killed her husband and tried to steal her land. Cody later learns that the "message" he was carrying was actually blank paper and that he was a decoy. Meanwhile, back in Sweetwater, the riders take care of an abandoned baby. The baby's mother eventually comes to get her.

Daddy's Girl
Buck has feelings for the bank owner's daughter, Kathleen Devlin, but her father, Jack Devlin, doesn't approve. Kathleen's cruel suitor, Lance Morgan tries to scare Buck off by sending thugs to beat him up. When Kathleen's father tries to force her to marry Lance, she and Buck run away together. Buck and Kathleen are chased and caught by Lance and his gang. When Lance tries to kill Kathleen's father, Buck kills Lance. Kathleen chooses to stay with her father after Lance is killed.

Bull Dog
An Eastern college boy named Ambrose Merryweather, Jr. whom the riders nickname Bull Dog, meets his hero, Jimmy. Bull Dog's uncle, Arther Merryweather, uses him as an unwitting acomplice is a sceme that endangers the riders. Arther Merryweather tries to start a war with the Indians by having the Pony Express riders ride through their land. Bull Dog ends up getting killed in a gunfight when the riders try to protect the land and stop the riders from riding through the Indians' land.

Matched Pair
Jimmy helps a friendly reval named Brad search for Jimmy's former bosse's kidnapped daughter Clara. Clara actually escaped with a man she loved with evidence of her father's corruption. When they find them, Clara kills herself after finding out that her boyfriend, Charlie Bass had been killed. Jimmy finds out the real truth when he reads a letter that Clara wrote him before she died. Jimmy gets into a gunfight with Brad (Jimmy won) and he takes the evidence to court.

Man Behind the Badge
Sam finds himself on the wrong side of the law when the man responsible for his wife, Jenny's murder takes over Sweetwater. He tries to have Sam convicted of murder when it was clear that Sam was only acting in self-defence. Sam ends up getting aquited, getting his badge back, and going after the man who was responsible for Jenny's death and also arson and destruction of private property in Sweetwater.

Then There Was One
Teaspoon sets out for Texas with an old comrade in arms to warn three other veterans that someone has been murdering the last men who truly remember the Alamo. After defeating the one responsible for the killings, Teaspoon is the last living veteran who fought in the Alamo.

Gathering Clouds, Part One
The tension between North and South reaches crisis proportions. Kid is recruited to infiltrate a band of Southern guerrillas led by a charismatic Robin Hood called the Hawk. Meanwhile, Ike has feelings for a young lady named Annie whoes boyfriend was killed.

Gathering Clouds, Part Two
Kid escapes the noose, but the Hawk is still on the loose, so Jimmy works his way into the gang, which hangs any pretence of civility to pursure its violent purpose. While the Army is out on a wild goose chase, the riders and the townspeople defeat the Hawk and his gang. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Annie's boyfriend is alive and she decides to marry him and have a life with him.
