Virginia and Michigan. I was in the 4th grade then and the summer I was nine years old, mom and dad bought the house overlooking Cape Cod Bay on Sagamore Highlands, Mass. From then on, my summers were spent on Cape Cod and winters in Ohio. Dad bought a 12 foot mahogany boat with sails and a one and a half power Neptune motor. I learned to swim that summer and two summers later, as soon as I could swim out to the lobster pot buoys, I was allowed to take the boat out by myself. I would go out every day with Lauretta Murray who lived next door. That summer had a couple of other 'Firsts' too. First time I ever puffed on a cigarette that Pat, Lauretta's younger brother, had snitched and we'd gone into the woods to try it. First time I was ever kissed when Lauretta's cousin Eddie came down to visit from Boston. And the First time I remember getting "Talked To" for any bad trouble. Lauretta, Pat and I had been over by the Jason's house and looking at ALL THOSE WINDOWS. I dared Pat to throw a stone and he did and broke a window. Then I threw one and it went right through the hole that Pat had made. A few weeks later my dad called me in to talk to me. He asked me if I had broken any of the Jason's windows. If my mother had asked me that question, I'd probably just have said 'No' and left it at that. After all, I Hadn't Broken a window…My stone went through a hole that was already Made by Pat! I always felt I had to keep anything that might upset mom away from her so she wouldn't worry so much. But with dad it was different. I told him I hadn't Broken any windows, but I Had thrown a stone and it went through a window that was already broken. Dad told me I shouldn't have done that. Later that summer after trying unsuccessfully to sell their home, the Jason's house burned down and everyone thought it was for the insurance money. On Saturdays I would go to the matinee movies in Buzzards Bay with the Murray kids. During the week we would play on the beach, go boating, take walks to the Little Store at Sagamore Beach, climb trees, race down Peaked Cliff and make up Plays.…which we would get mom to watch…making up our own stories and scenes and using swords and stuff we found in the attic. Dad came there Fourth of July weekend and the month of August. Then I got to play lots of games with him. Lauretta, Pat and I would play the card game 'Hearts' with him until the wee hours of the morning many nights. The summers at Cape Cod made for many more dear memories than the winters in Ohio. Winters meant school, which only held my interest because my friends were there. MaryAlice Clark and I became Best
