The First Mate and I just got back from a color tour of 6 northeastern states and 3 Canadian Provinces. Along the way I was reminded of the group here while driving through Springfield, Mass.
A notation in the travel guide named the town as "Birthplace of the American Automobile Industry".
It is recorded the Duryea Brothers built the first mass produced horseless carriages in that city, later moving to Peoria, Illinois and Saginaw, Michigan where they built models such as the Gem, which is pictured below.
This little three-wheeled convertible, was built between 1913-1920.
Only three are known to have survived. You can get more info on the Duryea story by clicking on the Gem.
