Well, no trip around Michigan would be complete without mentioning the Wolverines. Four separate companies, in four different cities over three distinct time periods were responsible for these cars.
Reid Manufacturing Company of Detroit and Wolverine Automobile & Commercial Vehicle Co of Dundee built the first Wolverines from 1904-1906. These 2stroke 2 cylinder 10hp and 15hp cars were available in 2 seater runabouts and 4 seater tonneaus. They were superseded by the Craig-Toledo.
From 1917-1920 Wolverine Motors, Inc of Kalamazoo built the Wolverine and the Wolverine Special. These $3,000 cars, made with much aluminum were guaranteed to do 75mph. The single speedster model was equipped with wire wheels, a pointed radiator, bicycle mudguards, step plates and a 30 gallon gas tank.
The Reo Motor Car Company of Lansing made Wolverines and marketed them as a brand of their own in 1927 and 28. They were, in fact, a smaller companion car to the Reo Flying Cloud models but sported their own radiator and hubcap insignia. Built in sedan models of 2 and 4 doors and as a two/four seater cabriolet, they were powered by a Continental 6 cylinder 25hp engine and ranged in price from $1,195-$1,295.
