Flatheads
The are of the
Siouan language and Plains culture area. The Flatheads inhabited
vicinity Flathead Lake and Flathead River. They are named the Flatheads
because they compass the heads of their babies into a peak by means of
a cone shape wicker headpiece. Normal in shape, but it has a flat
appearance. They would also tattooed their breast and face, they
also had several elaborate ceremonies.
They are not war-like. They
defend with bravery against their enemies the Blackfoots,
and Mandan. They were great and powerful
people. They were more agricultural than nomadic.
The number vastly diminished by a
small pox epidemic in 1837.
