They were known for training and breeding Appaloosas.
They also enjoyed soaking in the stream of hot water, then running and
jumping in the ice cold creek.
Clark
gave 3 boys some ribbons. The boys took the ribbons back to the village,
soon after Clark and his men were greeted. They were served a meal
by the Nez Perce. They had buffalo meat, dried salmon, berries, and
camas roots. The Nez Perce didn't know what to make of white men
with hair on their face. Also the Nez Perce didn't eat dog meat,
so they called the explorers "dog eaters."
Chief Twisted hair cheerfully gave
the Corps valuable information. Clark said that the Nez
Perce were admirable pilots and they were always capable of finding
the trail.
Later Clark drew a map of the area
and named the place Quamash (or Camas) Flats.
