A vast lava field fills the 83 square miles that currently make up
Craters of the Moon National Monument. Geologists believe that volcanic
eruptions in this region ceased approximately 2,000 years ago. Craters
of the Moon was declared a national monument in 1924.
The following pictures highlight the landscape of this unique region.
