Cold War era Captain Nathaniel Adam was framed for treason by General Wade Eiling who offered amnesty if Adam volunteered to test a radiation protection suit called the Atom Project. The test appeared to have failed when Adam, incased in a nearly indestructible alien alloy, was apparently disintegrated by a nuclear bomb. In reality, Adam survived the blast being hurled decades into the future, where General Eiling would continue to manipulate him as Captain Atom.
