Notes for REV. FRANCIS LUSK:
[Personal note from Steven Lusk, as of 27 May 2006]
The connection between the Rev. Francis Lusk and Samuel is not verified with any hard documentation, Francis and Phebe were married in the New Windsor Presbyterian Church in 1778, and in 1781 Samuel was baptised there. No other Lusks lived in New Windsor at the time, so we can definitely say that Samuel was the son of Francis and Phebe Wood Lusk.
[According to an e-mail from Barbara Lucas (Dixeebarb@aol.com) on Saturday, 9 Feb 2002 10:12:28 EST, the following is stated.]

[Clinton County Republican, Clinton County, Michigan," 7 Dec 1899, p12, c5, Indexed by the Genealogists of the CCHS http://www.dewittlibrary.com/CCHS/deaths.htm.]
Phoebe Huntoon, wife of the late Nathaniel
Huntoon, and one of the pioneers of Clinton county, died at the home of her son,
Plum Huntoon in the town of Olive, aged 84. She leaves one daughter and three
sons, Mrs. Susan M. Brown, of St. Johns, James A. Huntoon, of Eagle, Alonson, of
Lansing, and Plum Huntoon, of Olive.
Phoebe Lusk was born in the state of New York,
September 23, 1815, and died November 28, 1899. She was married in Clarendon,
New York, Decemvber 19, 1835, to Nathaniel Huntoon. Together they remained in
that place until the year 1854, when they came to Clinton county Mich., where
she and her husband journeyed toether in their pioneer life until the year 1893,
when he was taken from her by death. Seven children were born to them, four of
whom are now living to mourn the loss of a devoted and true mother. She united
with the Baptist church in her younger days; but not being favored with church
privileges since coming to this state, she united with no church here, but was
looked upon by her family as a mother with true Christian principles, and during
these last months of her sickness her faith in God was strong and she looked
forward to the end with calm resignation.

was born in Onondaga county, N.Y., where he lived till three or four years of age when he removed with his people to Orleans county. Twenty five years ago he came to Michigan and purchased the farm upon which he now lives, but after a residence of one year there he removed to Quincy and resumed the harness trade which had been the business of his life. Four years later he moved back upon the farm and to such good advantage has he employed his time that great improvements have been made upon it. His outbuildings, horse barn, corn barn, hog house, grain barn, hay and straw sheds and basement for stock are first-class in every respect. Mr. L. is a first-class farmer and his ambition is to make his farm produce all that it can possibly be made to do. When he purchased his farm it was still unimproved to a great extent, but with the proverbial Yankee stick-to-it-ive-ness he has overcome all obstacles. He was married 30 years ago to Miss Francis Grinnell, by whom he has raised two children. Mrs. L. is 50 years of age and was born in Renessaler county, N. Y., though her youthful days were principally spent in Saratoga, N.Y. Mrs. L. is a part of the salt of the earth and a more amiable lady it has never been our fortune to meet.
[From the Quincy Herald, Quincy, Branch County, Michigan, October 29, 1897:]
Another Pioneer Passes Away.
After a lingering illness of several months
Samuel Hull Lusk died at his house on west Chicago street in this village
Saturday morning, Oct. 23, 1897. Mr. Lusk was born in the town of Camillus,
Onondaga county, N.Y., June 18, 1821. At the age of six years he moved with his
parents to Orleans county, N. Y., and lived in that county until 1843, when he
moved to Genesee county N.Y., where he was married Nov. 8, 1843, to Julia F.
Grennell. In the spring of 1851 they moved onto the farm now occupied by their
son Herbert, one and a half miles west of Quincy village, where they lived one
year. They then moved to this village, where Mr. Lusk worked at his trade as
harness maker for four years, when they moved back to the farm and lived there
until the fall of 1887, when they again moved to village and have lived here
since. Two children were born to them, Herbert M. and Clara A., the latter
dying Oct. 18, 1883. He leaves a widow, one son, one grandson and two sisters
to mourn their loss.
Funeral services were conducted at the home on
west Chicago street Monday afternoon, Oct. 25th, Rev. W. H. Parson officiating,
and the remains were laid to rest in Lakeview cemetery. The funeral was largely
attended by old neighbors and friends, and among those present from out of town
were A. Miles and wife, Mrs. Ed Merrill and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brown of
Coldwater.
The family wish to express their thanks to
kind neighbors and friends for their many acts of kindness during Mr. Lusk's
sickness and also at the funeral.

CHILD DROWNS IN RICE CREEK
----------
ZOE LUSK, NINE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF BEN LUSK, LOSES LIFE.
----------
Falls FROM EGELER FOOT-BRIDGE WITHIN SIX FEET OF SHORE.
----------
Heroic Efforts of Louis Spencer to Save Companion Frustrated by The Victim
----------
One (sic) of the saddest accidents happening
in Marshall since the drowning of Clarence Howard and Miss Annette Fredenbeurg,
one year ago, occurred about five o'clock Friday afternoon when Miss Zoe Lusk,
the nine year old daughter of Me. and Mrs. Bennett Lusk, of South Madison street
lost her life in Rice Creek, by falling off the temporary foot bridge which
crosses the creek in the rear of the Marshall Gas company's plant.
The bridge was constructed several years ago by Antone Egeler when his
foundry at the foot of Madison street was in operation for the convenience of
reaching it from his residence on Locust street across the creek. It is a
narrow affair not over five feet in width and has no railing on either side.
The recent high water has also taken out several posts which allows it to sway
under the weight of a person crossing it.
Zoe had been across the bridge to a neighbor's to gather some lilacs and
was returning when her attention was attracted by some playmates on the north
bank, and overcome with giddiness and the swinging of the bridge, she made a
misstep and fell into the water when within six feet of the shore. Among the
children on the bank were Lewis and Laura Spencer, Joe and Johnnie Visel
children younger than Zoe. Laura waded out in the water and caught the
struggling girl by the hand crying, "Hold on, Zoe, and we'll get you out." Her
brother, Louis, then plunged in, but Zoe had relinquished her hold of Laura and
was being borne out into the swift current of the stream.
He struck out boldly after her, however, and secured hold of her hand, but
she was evidently half-conscious or paralyzed with fright, for her hand was limp
and she refused to help herself. The water at this point was a foot or two
above their heads and the boy found it impossible to combat the current with one
hand and drag the girl to the shore with the other through the rushing flood and
he released his hold until he could once more get his bearings. Then he made
another effort to reach her swimming into the center of the stream. This time,
she seized him by the hair with a death clutch and pulled him under the water.
It was only by a tremendous effort that he broke her hold and saved himself from
drowning. Unable to do more, he swam to shore.
Mrs. Thomas E. Brownfield, who lives on Pearl street on the north side of
the river, below the bridge, was in her garden and heard the splash and cries of
the children. She next saw the child floating down the stream and called to
Fred Walz, who lives next door. She was not in sight when he reached the bank,
and he at once shoved out in a boat which he had some difficulty in getting out
of his boathouse on account of the high water which had surrounded it.
At the same time Will Shaw also put out in a rowboat and the men began to
search for the girl who by this time had gone under for the third time and could
not be seen in the roiled water. They cast about for perhaps five minutes when
the light skirt worn by the girl was detected under two feet of water near the
bank back of the Schriber residence, and a touch of the paddle brought the body
to the surface. It was lying on the back with both arms outstretched. The face
was purple and not a sign of life could be detected.
Mrs. Brownfield put in a call for the sheriff and a physician while the
search was in progress and Mssrs. Fonda, Schaffer and Harthur from the sheriff's
office responded immediately. Meanwhile Mrs. Brownfield and Mr. Walz employed
"first aid" measures familiar to them, the former forcing open the jaws which
had set and drawing out the tongue which allowed considerable water to escape.
The girl was also rolled over a barrel by Mr. Walz, with similar results, and
Sheriff Fonda , who had arrived by this time continued the treatment.
Nothing availed, however, to resuscitate the patient, and she was carried
into the Brownfield house, where Dr. Church, who arrived presently, made an
examination. He declared that the girl was dead beyond any possibility of help
when she was taken out of the water.
The body remained there until removed by Undertaker Good to the home, 816
South Madison street. Meanwhile, the mother had arrived and was frantic with
grief over the tragedy. Mrs. Brownfield accompanied her home with the body and
assisted in the preparation for burial. The child had not been absent from home
more than half an hour, when the tidings came to the mother than she was
drowned.
Zoe was born in Newton Township, Oct. 4, 1904, and was the only daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Lusk and the oldest of five children. The family is in such
circumstances that any assistance which can be given the mother, especially in
this sad event, will be most worthily bestowed.
It appears that the children have been running back and forth over the
bridge ever since it has been constructed and this is the first accident which
has ever resulted fatally. Usually the water is so shallow in the creek that
the possibility of drowning is reduced to a minimum under ordinary
circumstances, but the little stream has been swelled to the width and depth of
a river at least six feet deep in the current.
Mr. Walz is confident that only the timely discovery of the body saved it
from being carried out into the river in which event it might never have been
recovered.

BENJAMIN LUSK LOSES SECOND CHILD
BY DROWNING-SON Falls FROM BRIDGE
CARL LUSK'S BODY FOUND IN FLUME OF
MUNICIPAL PLANT THIS MORNING
Believed He Drowned Last Night About 8:15 O'clock
After Watching Playmates In Water
Carl, the nine year old son of Benjamin Lusk of south Mulberry street was
drowned last evening about 8:15 o'clock when it is supposed he fell off the
railroad bridge near the municipal power house. The body was recovered at 11:20
this morning just above the water wheels in the flume.
Carl together with Lester Beatie, Alfred Beatie, Lester Rozelle, Douglas
Gauss, Charles Gauss and Lloyd Owens went to the river last evening to swim.
Carl however could not swim and he sat on the railroad bridge watching the other
boys. When the boys went behind the bushes to dress he was still sitting on the
bridge and that was the last seen of him alive. Carl was not to be seen and it
was supposed that he had gone home.
When he did not return home a search was instituted for him and early
this morning the flume which leads away from the place where the boys were
swimming was dragged.
Deputy Sheriff Scott was called out at midnight and he, and others
dragged the flume all night using the new grappling hooks which Sheriff Lucas
had made for use in emergency cases of this kind.
By an odd chance the boy's body was found.
Yesterday part of the grating which protects the water wheels of the
municipal plant fell in. This morning in order to make repairs on the grating
the water was let out of the flume west of the gates and about 11:20 Ralph Smith
who was down in the flume saw the lad's body resting about ten feet back of the
grating. His body had been swept down the flume through the opening left when
the grating fell in.
Frank Kern succeeded in dislodging the body and bringing it out. The
boy's father was immediately notified and the body was taken to the undertaking
parlors of H. G. Kelser where Coroner young, who had been notified impaneled a
jury.
The supposition of course is that the boy fell off the railroad bridge.
One report had it that the boy probably fell in while laughing at the funny
antics of his playfellows while they were in the water but the boys who were
with him say that he was still sitting on the bridge when they went to dress.
The probabilities are that he missed his footing while walking on the
bridge or it is possible that he was trying to walk along the edge of the bridge
an slipped and fell. None of the boys heard any outcry nor was there anything
to warn them of the plight of Carl.
This is the second child of Benjamin Lusk who has met death from
drowning. Seven years ago his little daughter Zoe was swept off a bridge on
Rice Creek during the high water in the spring and was drowned. Her body was
recovered shortly afterwards and heroic efforts to resuscitate were in vain.
Beside his father, Carl is survived by three brothers, Richard age 14,
Charles age 11 and Elmer age 10, and one sister living in Battle Creek who was
adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Davis.
After Coroner Carl Gray conferred with Benjamin Lusk and Deputy Scott, he
decided an inquest unnecessary.
No funeral arrangements had been made late this afternoon.
