Notes for REVEREND PARDON TILLINGHAST:

From Jeffrey Fuller WFT: Rev. Pardon Tillinghast was a pastor at the First Baptist Church in America at Providence, Rhode Island (the oldest of its denomination in America). He was also a cooper, merchant, ship owner, and trader. According to family tradition, he was a soldier in Cromwell's Army. He sailed from Alfriston, England while quite young in 1643. Pardon settled in Providence, RI in 1645 where he built the first meeting house at his own expense. In Rhode Island he received a land grant, Nov. 19 , 1645. He moved to Newport, RI in about 1657. Pardon was a representative to the General Court 1672-1680-1690-1694-1697-1700. He was a town councilman from 1688 to 1707. He built the first dock and warehouse in Providence and was first ruling elder of the First Baptist Church in America and succeeded Olney as pastor.

What evidence is there for Sarah Tillinghast, born 1654, dying in 1671?
See below, from a post I made to the Harrington (Herendeen) family forum:

Most sources (1-4) have not identified the family for Sarah, the wife of Joseph Herendeen. Some recent research has apparently raised the possibility that Sarah was a daughter of Reverend Pardon Tillinghast of Providence. This suggestion was passed on to me by email from Tillinghast researcher Todd Lawrence on April 12, 1999.
When Joseph Herendeen died intestate in 1694, his widow was unable to procure bondsmen for herself and her young children. The court ordered Pardon Tillinghast "to have some oversight and be some assistance to said woman, and for the ordering and tuition of her said children"(5). Pardon Tillinghast and his first wife Sarah Butterworth had a daughter named Sarah born November 17, 1654 (6), but a Tillinghast genealogy states that she died in 1671 (6). No reference was given for this daughter’s decease however and I have not found one in the Providence vital records. If there turns out to be a death or burial record or other documents noting her decease then Sarah Tillinghast cannot be Joseph Herendeen’s wife. On the other hand if Sarah’s decease is a case of "no further record after 1671" then this identification becomes quite plausible, as Joseph Herendeen married about then. Sarah would have therefore disappeared from the records as Sarah Tillinghast about the same time Joseph’s wife appeared as Sarah Herendeen. At the time of Joseph Herendeen died Pardon Tillinghast was among the political leaders in Providence and was therefore available to be assigned to oversee the affairs of an indigent widow without any family connection, but this responsibility would seem more likely to have been passed on to another family member if one were available. There are numerous Herendeen relatives nearby, some presumeably in prosperous circumstances, and there is no evidence that Joseph Herendeen and his wife were not on reasonably good terms with them. Seemingly the only reason they would be passed over would be for a maternal relative, in this case [if the assumption is correct], Pardon Tillinghast.
Sarah is not mentioned in the will [proved Feb. 15, 1718] of Pardon Tillinghast (7), so if she was Joseph Herendeen’s wife she had died prior to that date. Pardon did leave each grandchild 5 shillings, but did not name or number them (7).
