CALUMET & HECLA SMELTING WORKS PAYROLL RECORDS

A few years back I had the good fortune to find the Calumet and Hecla Smelting Works Payroll Records from 1910 to the Miners strike in July 1913 at a garage sale. The ledgers are hard bound and measure 15 1/2 X 11 1/2 inches wide. All entries are made by ink pen in long hand. The ledgers are very interesting because they furnish information about individual purchases from the company store along with occupations, pay rates, and earnings.

The Smelting Works was located in Hubbell, Michigan. Large furnaces were used to melt the copper into bars for shipment. Hubbell is located approximately 10 miles North of Hancock, Michigan along Highway M26.

I have added a complete copy of the January 1910 payroll on the following pages.
