The pictures show my father, William Holappa, with his 1930 Model A Ford. The pictures were taken near Elo, Michigan where I was born and raised. Elo is approximately 20 miles South West of Houghton Michigan. Elo is bordered on the North side by Tapiola, on the East side by Askel, on the South side by Pelkie, and on the West side by Horoscope, Michigan. They are all Finnish/American Communities. The area is known as the Copper Country because of copper ore deposits which stretch from Copper Harbor to Ontonagon, Michigan. The snow gets so deep in the Copper Country that it is hard, at times, even for a Model A Ford with tire chains on to keep the roads clear. The area is a snowmobilers and skiers paradise. I saw the Copper Country and surrounding areas, for the first time, from the rumble seat of that Model A Ford. Pleasant memories. I will tell you more about life in the Finnish/American community of Elo later.
