Sugar Beet |
Ethanol is an amazing
liquid that can be burned to produce energy. This energy can heat our
homes, create electricity for lights, or be used as fuel in cars
and trucks.
Ethanol is made from plants like these. Some people even use vegetable wastes left in the fields after harvest. |
|
Corn |
Ethanol is usually made
from corn. The corn plant sucks up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as
it grows. The plant uses the carbon dioxide to form starch and sugar,
which is stored in its roots, stalks and leaves.
Starch and sugar is used to make alcohol. Ethanol is an alcohol. |

Jerusalem Artichoke |
People who care about the
environment use ethanol in their cars instead of dirty, fossil fuels.
Gasoline and diesel are fossil fuels. They put too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They also pollute our air with poisons. |
|
Potato |
Too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes "global warming". When the earth gets too hot, plants die. Animals that eat plants die, too. Waters dry up. Dried out forests catch on fire. |
