Evergreen
and Heather
Distant fields I see below the mountain where I stand
A winding road that's red with clay, carved out of the land
Along the ridge a painted fence with lilacs standing overhead
Purple blossoms sending forth a fragrance sent from heaven
Beauty stands amid the fields, blanketed with heather
Rich in purple flowers that spread to make a bed
I breathe deep of the beauty, the land so rich and sweet
I linger for a moment and let the memories sweep

A valley full of evergreen and sparkling brooks that flow
To a distant farm house, oh so long ago
The ice house made of red brick, the farm house on the hill
The barn that stood below the hollow, a pond where I would swim
Memories of long ago, fill my mind with sweet thoughts
A time when I was but a child and tasted joy and peace
Distant fields I see below the mountain where I stand
A winding road I trod upon to reach and touch the land
