Here's a toast to one with a real flare for it......TO REBECCA! Cheers!
August 22, 1998Dearest Rebecca,
What are we going to do without you? We will miss you deeply. But I have a feeling you will be embracing a new vision and a more powerful part of yourself in making this move. In trying to decide what to say in this "Farewwell", (which feels hard to write incidentally--mixed emotions--excitement for you trepidation, sadness at your leaving etc.), I decided that rather than focus on the past and all our shared memories, I would instead identify some guiding principles that I use to propel me through life and work, that may be useful to you in your new world. I found these originally in a book by Margaret Lulic entitled Who We Could Be At Work. Given that to start with at least, much of your existence will be focused on the work environment, what better place to continue the challenges of self-development and personal growth than in the place we spend at least half of our waking lifetime?
Here they are. I hope they are helpful:
* Hope is a clear intuitive knowing that recognizes that good can triumph when charged with courage and unshakable determination.
* Doubt is part of growth. The challenge is to live with questions, not always to come up with answers. What are we in this for? What's the big picture?
* What is my gift? What is it that I have to give to the world?
* If I am living my purpose and vision, I will live from a place of inspiration. If I am inspired, others will be inspired by my presence. They will find their own fire, passion, and reason for doing things well.
* The great teachers have shown that if we seek change, we must first embody the change ourselves. By living it, we mirror it and influence others more deeply.
* The laws of nature do not demand that we inherit the future. Rather, it is ours to create. We can create a dramatically different, healing workplace.
* More and more people are asking, "Is this all there is?" We need to create more meaning in our lives and work. Ask, "What was I born to contribute through my whole life's work?"
* Business is the most powerful institution on earth. Responsibility must be commensurate with power. Organizations must ask, "What higher purpose should our bottom line be serving?"
* A vision, without a task, is but a dream.
A task, without a vision, is drudgery.
A vision, with tasks, is the hope of the world.* Without hope, nothing changes.
Without hope, we stop dreaming.
Without dreams, we can create nothing new.* How do you create courage and vision? Ask deep questions of yourself and allow a dialogue to emerge between mind, heart, spirit and body.
Rebecca, as you launch into this new and challenge filled universe, I know that you carry with you enormous hope, vision and courage. This country will benefit greatly from the contribution that you can make. Although we won't be there in person to witness your growth and change, PDW will be there in spirit, encouraging and supporting your actions, your insights, as well as your quiet reflections. May poetry continue to flow through your veins and out into your community. God bless.
With great love,
Sarah
