The
Coasters "The
Definitive
Coasters...The A & B
Sides"
& "Those Hoodlum
Friends...The
Coasters in Stereo"
History of
R'n'B
Records,
2013
Superlative
compilations
of
essential
American
music
history
-
Not many
groups of
any kind can
claim to
have such a
distinct
influence on
American,
and
therefore
worldwide,
pop and rock
n roll music
as The
Coasters.
Their
lengthy
string of
iconic hits,
mostly
courtesy of
the pen of
their
mentors and
genius song
writing team
Leiber &
Stoller, and
also their
unique blend
of
personality
and vocal
harmony (not
to mention
the
legendary
sax lines of
King
Curtis),
took the
mixture of
doo wop,
rock n roll,
soul and
jazz to new
territory,
and put them
at the
exulted
pinnacle of
the original
Rock n Roll
and R’n’B
era.
-
Covered by,
and beloved
of, everyone
from The
Beach Boys,
Elvis,
Zappa, Leon
Russell,
Alex Harvey,
the Grateful
Dead, these
tunes were
also central
to the Brit
Beat boom of
the early
60s
(Hamburg-era
Beatles’
live set was
heavy on
Coasters
covers). In
addition,
it’s
difficult to
understate
the sheer
magnitude of
their
influence on
popular
music; Put
simply;
these are
the
explosive
and
innovative
bricks and
mortar of
all the rock
n roll and
R’n’B you’ve
ever loved.
These two
new lavishly
packaged
and annotated
double CD
collections
from the
‘History of
RnB’ stable
certainly do
justice to
the legacy
and the
fantastic
energy of
this
incendiary,
funny, and
entertaining
music. This
is energetic
music that
screams
youth,
attitude and
sass, with
jokes, wit,
satire and risque humour
in spades
(the likes
of ‘Little
Egypt’ were
banned on
release)
that even
after all
this time
still leap
from the
speakers at
full pelt.
The first
set, “The
Definitive
Coasters –
The A & B
sides”
collects
both sides
of the
groups first
30 7”
singles from
their
faultless
run
comprising
1954 to
1962. As
such, the
crammed-full
first disc
of A-Sides
is as damn
near perfect
as an 80
minute
receptacle
of music can
conceivably
be, and an
essential
inclusion
for anyone
with even a
passing
interest in
the
development
of American
music. All
the
legendary
moments are
there back
to
back…’Yakety
Yack’, ‘Youngblood’,
‘Riot in
Cell Block
#9’, ‘Poison
Ivy’,
‘Charlie
Brown’,
‘Three Cool
Cats’,
‘Along Came
Jones’, ‘Searchin’’,
Smokey Joe’s
Café’,
‘Shopping
for Clothes’…you
get the idea.
The B sides
disc, quite
understandably,
has a
moderately
lower strike
rate, and
features
some less
exceptional
ballads when
compared
with the
vibrancy of
the
revolutionary
hits,
however its
hard to
argue with
the likes of
the
genuinely
funky
‘Turtle
Dovin’ and
‘What is the
Secret of
Your Success’
which both
rank as high
as any
A-Side.
Absolutely
essential.
Stereo
recordings
were
obviously
quite an
exclusive
luxury, and
in their
technological
infancy,
during the
1950s, but
seeing as
the Coasters
had access
to the best
studios, the
finest
session
bands and
the top
producers,
these
special
stereo
recordings
were cut
from
different
takes for
the serious
adult audio
connoisseurs.
The second
collection
to see
release here;
‘Those
Hoodlum
Friends…Coasters
in Stereo’
comprises 49
tracks of
rare stereo
takes of
some of the
hits and
also key
album cuts
and
out-takes,
as well as a
full disc
packed with
composite
studio
tracks and
alternate
versions and
studio
chatter from
the archive.
Many of
which have
never been
released
before. Jazz
standards
like ‘Moonglow’,
‘Autumn
Leaves’,
‘Moonlight
in Vermont’
and ‘Sunny
Side of the
Street’ are
recorded
with
orchestras
and show a
more
polished
traditional
jazz and
balladeering
side to
their style,
which
although
perfectly
good is not
quite as
exciting as
their more
forthright
material.
While many
early stereo
recordings
are inferior
to their
mono
comparisons,
the mixes
here are
sharp,
luxurious
and well
defined.
Definitely
one for the
already
converted,
collectors
and
connoisseurs,
but it’s a
look at this
important
music from a
slightly
altered
angle (‘Run
Red Run’ and
‘The Snake
and the
Bookworm’
offer very
fresh
perspectives
in their
alternate
forms).
Both
these
generous
collections
are finely
packaged,
expertly
compiled
sets, that
are lovingly
annotated
with
encyclopedic
attention to
detail.
History has
never been
so much damn
good fun!

The Coasters
were one of the greatest vocal acts of the 1950s, and their songs remain among the most
entertaining in pop history. They had numerous hits (almost all penned and produced by the
legendary Leiber & Stoller), but the two tracks that still play heavily today are
"Yakety Yak" and "Charlie Brown." However, as perfect as these two
songs are, the rest of the Coasters' catalog offers plenty of humor, irony and sly social
observations. Many of Leiber & Stoller's finest numbers, from "Three Cool
Cats" to "Smokey Joe's Café" to "Riot in Cell Block #9," were
vehicles for the Coasters and deserve to be heard as often as "Yakety Yak."

The
essential Coasters CD
for "beginners" and casual buyers !
Sixteen (16) Atco top sellers from "..Riot.."
to "Little Egypt", beautifully packaged. In Europe (same cover)
issued with a bonus track, "Sorry But I´m Gonna Have To Pass".
The treat for "beginners" (all titles are taken from "50 Coastin´
Classics" with good mono sound). This is the CD you simply have to own if
you only want one Coasters´ CD easily available thru your local dealer - and get the
European issue if you´re able to! But better still - Get the next listed double-CD! Inlay
comments by Randy Poe. Compiled by Gary Stewart.
(Note: The European issue has
"Sorry But I´m Gonna Have To Pass" added as a bonus):
AMG ***** The Coasters were the 1950s´ (and early rock´s) dominant
novelty/comic R&B ensemble, benefiting from Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller´s lyrical
wit and inspired productions. They weren´t simply proficient clowns; the Coasters were a
skilled vocal unit whose talents were utilized on slice-of-life narratives, prophetic
youth manifestos, and even an occasional teen anthem, as well as the prototype humorous
vehicles "Yakety Yak" and "Poison Ivy". Although Rhino has already
given them the deluxe two-disc treatment, consumers who either don´t want that much
Coasters material or prefer only the hits are nicely served by this 18-track (actually 16;
ed.note) anthology. It contains every major release, plus valuable lesser-known selections
as "Shoppin´ For Clothes" and "What About Us".

Large review at All Music Guide
(PS Steven, it's the Complete Atco recordings!)
From Blues & Rhythm magazine review by Tony Watson:
"Of all of the Coasters many reissues, this is by far the most superior
package, being a four-fold set... The sound... is immaculate. The stereo
tracks are gorgeous.. The set overall, is a 'must have', particularly if you
didn't buy the Sequel CDs, but even if you did, you would do right to give
this superior set some serious consideration". |

All Music Guide:
*****
- All Atco recordings in a terrific box-set
in cronological order
1954-1966
- 113 tracks
on 4CDs.
It's here now - the terrific Handmade issue - out on December
12, 2007. Originally planned to be issued in September, but now the best
Christmas gift for the true Coasters-fan.
From Rhino Handmade web site presentation:
The Coasters were, in fact, the first group ever to be inducted
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - all those so recognized in 1986, the
inaugural year, were individual artists. It's a singular honor that's a
fitting testament to their unique sound, stellar vocalizations and riotously
great material. Rhino Handmade was more than willing to dig a little deeper
into their body of work for THERE'S A RIOT GOING' ON: THE COASTERS ON
ATCO, a 4-CD boxed set including an entire disc of rarities and
previously unreleased tracks. You won't be able to stop yourself from
shoutin'!
The original Coasters
1956-1957
Compilation produced by James Ritz. Digitallay re-mastered by Dan Hersch
with Sound production by Bill Inglot. Booklet essay by James Ritz.
Project supervision:
Mason Williams.
Project assistance: Steve Woolard. Annotation and discographical details by James
Ritz and Claus Röhnisch. DiscFour has two completely different takes
- never-before-issued - of "Yakety Yak" and "Crocodile"
(which are in stereo, although presented in the set as in mono; thanks Tom
Taber for your notice on the fact they are in stereo).
The classic Coasters 1958-1961
Please note that that stereo masters labeled with * which do not have the term "alternate"
(some of them marked prev. unissued on... ) are the same masters as the mono masters which are issued on various
Coasters CDs (most of them on "50 Coastin' Classics"). "The Definitive Soul Collection"
has been delayed with no news of when the record will be released.
The qualitative Coasters
1961-1966
Just some minor notes on
discographical details
DiscOne:
"Smokey Joe´s Cafe" and "Just Like Fool" prob recorded
July 7,
1955 (not 1954)
and "Down In Mexico" did not reach the Pop charts, only R&B.
DiscThree:
"Hongry" issued 2/65, not 3/65.
DiscFour: The alternate "Charlie Brown" was originally issued on the
SD Atco stereo single and on the Clarion LP (although without the chat
and with shorter fadeout). Tom Taber has noticed that the previously
unissued alternates of "Yakety Yak" and "Crocodile" are both in hi-fi.
Goldmine magazine April 11, 2008 (issue 727) had a nice article on the set (featuring
an interview by Peter Lindblad of James Ritz) plus a review.

The Coasters “Down Home” 302 066 844
2 (CD)
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Coasters were one of the
most popular groups to come out of Los Angeles in the late
50s and early 60s. With the writing and producing team of
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (who had written “Jailhouse
Rock” for Elvis, “Stand By Me” for Ben E. King, as well as
“Along Came Jones” and “Charlie Brown”), The Coasters
charted almost two-dozen hits.
• The release features the last recordings The Coasters made
with Leiber and Stoller, including “Down Home Girl,”
“Mustang Sally,” “Cool Jerk,” and the classic Barry Mann,
Leiber-Stoller song “On Broadway.”
• This is the first time these historic Coasters recordings
have been presented properly on CD. The album includes the
chart hit “Love Potion Number Nine,” as well as “D.W.
Washburn,” recorded before The Monkees and considered a
masterpiece in the same class as Leiber-Stoller’s Peggy Lee
recording of “Is That All There Is?”
• Most of the songs in this collection were recorded in the
late 60s and were originally issued on the Date and King
labels.

The most famous collection!
As near
you can come a definitive presentation of The Coasters, with 51 titles packed in a
beautiful double-sleeve. Contains the original Atco mono singles tracks (except "The
Slime", which is the LP track) plus two previously unissued titles - "Hey
Sexy" and "Shake ´Em Up And Let ´Em Roll".
Missing are a.o. "Dance!" and "Gee, Golly",
but there are some bonus tracks from Date/King, "D.W. Washburn",
"Soul Pad" and "Down Home Girl". A
pleasure for a collector, and the best Coasters´ buy with a wonderful inlay booklet, and
still easy to order via your regular supplier (or any of the large Internet dealers). If
you have this you don´t need "The Very Best of.."! Great booklet with text from
Randy Poe, discography compiled by Leiber-Stoller and compilation produced by James
Austin, Gary Stewart and Bill Inglot.
The set includes the original Atco singles mono tracks,
plus "Hey Sexy" and "The Slime" in mono, plus four
Date/Columbia sides). The
E stands for
the anywhere else unissued "Shake ' Em Up...", and for the mono
versions of "Zing! Went The Strings..", "Stewball", "Sorry But Im' Gonna..",
"The Slime" plus a couple more mono versions also on the "Definitive Soul
Collection" 2CD.
AMG ***** Although it may well be too much for the casual fan, this double
CD is easily the best Coasters retrospective ever assembled. Besides featuring every one
of their hits, it also contains nine strong tunes cut in the mid-'50s by the Robins, who
evolved into the Coasters after some personnel changes. As for the enticing obscurities,
"Three Cool Cats" and "Besame Mucho" were cut by the Beatles on
unreleased recordings in the early '60s, and "Ain't That Just Like Me" would be
a small hit for the Searchers (actually the Hollies; ed.note). "Down in Mexico"
and "Brazil" are cool R&B/Latin melodramas, and "Shoppin' for
Clothes," "What About Us," and "That Is Rock & Roll" are
half-forgotten vignettes of youthful independence that stack up against the best songs of
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote most of the group's material. Indeed, there's
little difference in quality between the hits and the B-sides on this comp, either in the
group's matchless ensemble R&B/comedy vocals or Leiber/Stoller's witty songwriting.
The accompanying booklet features comments on most of the tracks by Leiber and Stoller
themselves.
-- Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
{The New} Rolling Stone Album Guide *****
All of these (The Coasters') career hihglichts and more are
contained on the essential Rhino double-CD set ...An accompanying booklet
reprints ciritc Robert Paslmer's liner-notes from a 1982 double-vinyl
Coasters retrospective, Young Blood, and includes song-by-song
annotation by Leiber and Stoller, plus complete sesseionography and release
dates. Tho photos of the group with L&S in the studio are priceless.

In March, 1997 Sequel Records, a division of Castle Communications (Castle Music) in
London, England issued a 4CD series of all available Coasters (and Robins) ATCO / Atlantic
tracks (including alternate takes and stereo editions). Here those four CDs, containing 98
tracks (although it should´ve been 102), are listed with track titles given in playing
order as given on sleeves - and on inlay booklets. These CDs are very hard to find today.

in booklet text; Dance (the extended Clarion edition);
Poison Ivy (the unedited original
version with no dubbed
güiro perc.), the stereo version of Poison Ivy
(alternate LP 33-371 edition), The Snake & The Bookworm
(original single/LP issue - the one included is the complete alternate
"Japanese" version - also issued on the stereo version of the original LP, SD
33-135). The latter two are actually referred to in the booklet texts as included in the
3rd and 4th CDs (although not listed on tracks lists).
The alternate stereo version of "Yakety Yak" (prob. take 6) is also missing.
"Girls Girls Girls (Part I)" appears twice in stereo, meaning the alternate
mono version is missing. "Stewball" appears with same master in mono
and stereo (meaning the Clarion version is missing) and "Wait A Minute"
also appeara twice with same master. The several extra treats on the "Charlie
Brown" CD of 2000 are naturally not included either
and not the two new ones on Rhino Handmade of 2007, alternate mono versions
of "Yakety Yak" (take 3) and "Crocodile" (take 1).
Several of the tracks on these are stereo
editions (including the whole One By One - listen to Carl Gardner
singing "Moonglow"). The Rhino CDs have the single mono editions - and or
the first time we find a CD version of "One By One". With these records you
complete your Coasters collection with quite alternate sounds! Ninety-Nine (99) Coasters
tracks from Atco, including all Robins´ Spark titles. Several of the tracks on CD 869 are
never-before-issued stereo editions of their great hits "Yakety Yak",
"The Shadow Knows", "Charlie Brown",
"Sorry But I´m Gonna Have To Pass", "Three Cool
Cats", "Zing! Went The Strings.." and "Girls
Girls Girls". CD
871 includes alternate stereo masters of "Keep On Rollin´",
"Stewball", "What About Us", "Run
Red Run", "Little Egypt", "Wake Me,
Shake Me", "Bad Blood" and a stereo edition of "Hey Sexy" plus
a never-before-issued original master of "I´m A Hog For You"
(a wonderful one), and an edited version of "Riding Hood".
There is a mix-up on the notes for the CDs concerning "Bad Blood", which
has
the alternate stereo version on "Coast Along", not "Greatest Hits".
This series is a must for a true Coasters
fan - (at least if you will not be able to get the Rhino Handmade Box. Each CD contains 24-25 tracks and they are all based on the original four Atco LPs
with bonus tracks completing an almost full study of the Coasters´ work for Atco
("Searchin'" and "Young Blood" from the original Atco LP "The
Coasters" are also featured on "Greatest Hits" and appear only on the
latter of the Sequel reissues).
Get them as soon as possible, since they are out of catalog!
All four super CDs have been obtainable via the Internet, but most sites don´t have ´em
anymore.
Note: Covers on Sequal identical to the four original
Coasters´ Atco LPs (also including the back covers in the inlay). Discographical
information ctsy Claus Röhnisch´s "Those Hoodlum Friends" (original 1988
edition). Booklet text: Seamus McGarvey (who had interviewed Carl Gardner for these
releases). Produced for reissue by Bob Fisher and Brian Watson. Dedicated to the late
Brian Watson. Distribution: Tony Rounce. Manufactured in Germany (Musicrama).

Recorded
Live in Boston, Mass.
at the "Boston Tea Party Room"
at the peak in 1969 !
with Gardner, Guy, Speedo, Bright, and Palmer.
Eleven tracks in real live show-time (bootleg).
Try to find this - you may
get it from Roots and Rhythm. The
editor has obtained a copy on the e-bay auction - and it is just great! - the four tracks
featuring Gardner´s Coasters in 1973 on the "Cornell Gunther" New Rose CD are
completely different to these - although the orchestration accompaniment is almost the
same.
Except for the inserted "T´ain´t Nothin´ To Me" the tracks run in one
suite order (with all four goofing around between the songs). Many of the tracks here have
long running time ("Searchin´" with a clowny Guy runs for 5:10, "Zing!
..." with Bright and Speedo for 3:55, and "Along Came Jones"
.. goofs around for 7:02). "T´aint´t Nothin´..." is stolen from the 1963 live
Apollo Atco session, but "Speedo´s Back..." is a completely new version,
running for 2:34. The Coasters at their peak, says the cover - and they sure are. A very
worth-while-buy!
Thanks - Todd Baptista - for letting me know about this and keeping my eyes open in
order to purchase it! It keeps on keeping me happy. The

Two
original LPs on One CD!
On December 21, 2004 Collectables (oldies.com) issued two of The
Coasters' original Atco LPs on one CD. Great to have them back in their original
form."The Coasters" features fourteen tracks from 1954-1957 including eight
Robins tracks. "One Kiss Led To Another" runs for 2:49 (not 2:35). The "One
By One" part of the CD features twelve 1960 recordings where each of The Coasters
handles jazz standars. "Moonlight In Vermont" is spelt ".. in
Vermount" on this new CD (a spelling almost as common as the original). The tracks on
that part of the CD are in nice stereo (like the Sequel tracks). The inlay leaflet has the
original liner notes of each LP (by Gary Kramer and Paul Ackerman) and it is a real nice
package with the original album covers in color printed direct on the disc. Get this great
issue! The Collectables "Coast Along with The Coasters" is recently issued
on "single"
album - in stereo - and "The Coasters' Greatest Hits" was reissued on ATco/Atlnatic
CD some years ago.
Review by Frank Scott (Roots & Rhythm)
26 tracks, 71 mins, recommended
The first two LPs by my favorite 50s and 60s r&B/ rock 'n' roll group. The first LP
has 14 tracks with one classic after another including their first hits (Searchin'/ One
Kiss Led To Another and Young Blood) tracks they had previously recorded for Spark as The
Robins (Smokey Joe's Cafe/ Riot In Cell Block Number Nine/ Framed, etc) and other
delights. The second LP, is, to say the least, a bit of a departure. It features
completely straight versions of pop and jazz standards performed by individual members of
the group with orchestral accompaniment. The performances are well done and the singers
sound quite comfortable in this setting but I'm not quite sure who the audience for the LP
were. It's too "straight" for the teen audience but probably not straight enough
the moms and dads. That being said it's worth a listen with Billy Guy's performances of
the bluesy Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You and Don't Get Around Much Anymore being
particularly effective thanks to his eccentric vocal stylings and Cornel Gunter doing a
heartfelt rendition of Autumn Leaves.
In November, 2008 a Hallmark CD reissue of The Coasters' original LP "The
Coasters" surfaced, with a terrible cover featuring the Las Vegas Larry
Marshak Coasters. It has the 14 tracks in changed running order (Hallmark CD
703262).

The Hoodoo reissue of 2011: The UK
(Discovery) Hoodoo issue features the same tracks (One By One in stereo)
plus three bonus tracks: the original mono single versions of Yakety Yak,
Poison Ivy, and That Is Rock & Roll. This February 2011 resissue has a
16-page booklet included with lots of nostalgia memorabilia - and notes
by Gary Blailock (with several sentenses directly copied from this web
site :-) - and with the original liner notes from the LPs plus full
discography of the tracks.
It is a great record for the true Coasters fan (in the
"public domain").
PS - as often before some images are the Cornell
Gunter Coasters of the 60s, but in general the booklet gives fine
reading. |

Reissue
of original 1962 stereo LP
Identical to the Atco stereo LP SD 33-135
issue, with nice Atco tracks, issued on November 29, 2005. This means this CD contains the
alternate stereo editions, a.o. the complete different version of "The Snake &
The Bookworm" - here featuring King Curtis sax (not Jerry Leiber's electric piano -
and not even including the phrase "Snake and the book worm"). So if you have the
original mono LP 33-135 you will get a different album here, since the stereo takes are
special editions - some complete alternate takes! Insert notes taken from the original
Atco LP.

The
classic album !
Reissue of the famous Atco LP of 1959
with a perfect stereo sound on many tracks. 12 titles - and please notice this: "Poison
Ivy" here is the unedited version without the extra
güiro perc (Rhino´s
and Sequel´s have a dubbed wood perc), and that "Yakety Yak" is
the alternate stereo version. One song not on many other compilations is the
wonderful "Sweet Georgia Brown". Produced by Jerry Leiber &
Mike Stoller. Cover photo: Garrett-Howard. Cover design: Maivin Israel. Copyright:
Atlantic Recording Corporation 1989. Distributed by WEA. The record includes the original
LP back cover comments by Ira Howard from The Cash Box. The
E for this CD is
for the mono master of "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart" (although
you will find that mono master onother Coasters compilations too - but this
is the best buy and an nostalgic album in its own). Same
master in stereo is on "The Complete Atco Recordings"). The
Hallmark issue has no inlay.
Beware of other CDs titled "Greatest Hits" ! - only this has the original
Atco hits. |

Incredible
- unissued - true stereo
- studio chat - alternates !
On June 8, 2000 this unbelievable release arrived in my mail-box - and it contains
previously unissued titles, true stereo masters, previously unknown alternates - and
everything completed with studio chat! Simply the best thing that ever can happen to a
Coasters fan! The
E
for this CD is for the chats added to the
origingal stereo masters. On "The Complete Atco Recordings" only the
alternates have the chat included.
You simply won´t believe
your eyes - and especially not your ears! 24 superb - and mostly alternate - Atco tracks (22 of them
in true stereo - and 18 of them with The Coasters at the hights of their artistic skills
in the Atlantic Studios at 234 West 56th Street in 1958) containing original stereo
masters of "Charlie Brown", "Yakety Yak",
´"I´m A Hog For You", "Zing! Went The Strings Of
My Heart", "Sorry, But I´m Gonna ...", "Three
Cool Cats", "Hey Sexy", "Stewball", "Riding Hood",
and "The Shadow Knows" - most of ´em with introductional
studio chat (and sometimes after-track goofing)! Please note that the above
listed do not have the studii chat included in the Rhino Handmade Box
(only the alterntes have the chat also oin Rhino Handmade). This "must-have"
"Charlie Brown" CD includes a previously never-before-heard "Crocodile"
- It´s a wonderful unison fast-tempo song with a terrific Curtis sax solo. Why has this
title not been issued? And if that weren´t enough! There are alternate
"outtakes" (what outtakes - lasting for over 2 minutes each!) of "Charlie
Brown", "The Shadow Knows" and "Yakety
Yak", a simply superb Gardner-led alternate of "Three Cool Cats"
with the other Coasters dooaw-ing, a terrific alternate of "Hey Sexy"
- this time with Gardner as a solo-lead! More: A slow alternate of the unreleased "I´m
A Hog For You" and two versions in faster tempo subtitled "Yea-Yea"
(one of them not on The Rhino Handmade Box).
Plus all the studio-chat, the false starts etc. etc. The true stereo sound is simply
perfect all the way thru - and sometimse even quite different from the Sequel editions! You must find
this one! There is only one thing wrong with this CD - It´ll be hard to find (due to the
fact that the CD has the same catalogue number as the original Mr R&B LP/CD) - and
there is absolutely no information at all how this CD came to be, or who has released it
(feels like an English release due to the spelling of some tracks, but I ´m certain it´s
an American bootleg). Try Relic Record Shoppe, 136 Main St. Hackensack,
NJ 07601, USA - phone number: (201) 342-4848 in order to get it.
The CD has actually "borrowed" the cover of the original
Mr R&B LP/CD!One really wonders why Warner Bros. or Rhino have not dug deeper into the
Atco/Atlantic vaults in order to serve the public with this really exciting stuff years
ago! Well at least someone, somewhere has done it now! Also: check the repackage below!

Anthology 1955 - 2005
featuring rare & unissued recordings
This CD was issued at The Coasters' 50th anniversary party in Florida on November 5, 2005.
Great stuff. The inlay cover also has a photo of the classic Coasters with the following
reading: "The Coasters began with Carl Gardner in 1955 and he has stayed with the
group and been the Coasters' spokesman ever since. In 1987, The Coasters were the first
group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Halll of Fame. Though often imitated, The
Coasters have never been duplicated. Fifty years later, the group and Carl are still going
strong, continuing to do what they do best - Entertain!". "The Snake &
The Bookworm" on this issue is identical to the original Atco mono version
with Mike Stoller's electric piano - not the unison sung stereo version with
King Curtis on sax (the latter on the Collectables re-issue). "The Climb"
has both original single sides edited into one track. |

The Date-King sides
plus bonus tracks from Billy Guy in Nashville
Perfect Date/King buy
- unless you have come across the Varese Sarabande (Varese Vintage) "Down
Home" CD of 2007. You will find the qualitative Coasters at high class - again produced by Leiber
and Stoller - with a bunchful of new compositions and some R&B / Soul classics. An
essential
CD if you want the Date recordings of 1966-68 and the King titles of 1971 (and they´re
good!). Here you have all 12 tracks from the "On Broadway" King
LP in stereo plus all eight Billy Guy tracks from the Gusto/Power Pak LP of 1977.
This wonderful CD is still obtainable from North America (and has recently
been reissued on Gusto/TeeVee), and you simply must get it if
you´re owner of one or more Atco / Atlantic / Rhino / Sequel CDs! But:
to tell the truth the re-recrdings by Guy and Jones are simply not good
versions! The CD is available thru most
Internet dealers - also on vinyl
DXD-7786. CD has good stereo sound. The eight Guy tracks and eight tracks from
"On Broadway" on DeLuxe Canada CD 1006, titled "16 Greatest Hits"
(from 1986), not identical to Trip LP and much worse sound (see "Fake Coasters
albums"). On the 2006 reissue on Gusto TeeVee the track no. 16 is titled (Down
At) Papa Joe's (as it was on the British original "On Broadway" LP).
*** Review by Joe Pasko from US for amazon.com:
Some clarification is needed here! Yes, 8 of the 20 tracks on this CD are, in fact,
remakes of the Coasters original 1950's Atlantic classics (Charlie Brown, Searchin', Young
Blood, Along Came Jones, Yakety Yak, Poison Ivy, Little Egypt, and One Foot Draggin' -
the last a new song;ed.note). These were cut in 1977 for the Gusto label, by a
group featuring lead vocalist Billy Guy and bass-singer Dub Jones, both of whom were
members of the "classic" Coasters line-up of the 50's and early 60's. However,
the remaining 12 tracks are not remakes at all, but newly recorded songs by the
then-current, "official" Coasters, cut for the Date and King labels between 1968
and 1972 (act 1966-). The group featured on these cuts included Billy Guy, founding member
Carl Gardner, and Earl "Speedo" Carroll (formerly of the Cadillacs). Important
is the fact that these 12 songs were produced and arranged by Leiber & Stoller, who
also wrote several of them. Although these recordings represented an attempt to keep the
Coasters' sound contemporary (late 60's/ early 70's soul & dance), the wry humor of
the famous Leiber-Stoller/Coasters collaborations of the Atlantic Records years remained
intact. Note also, the covers of other artists' hits of the period: Mustang Sally, Cool
Jerk, The In Crowd - not bad choices at all! So...the 8 remakes are certainly no
substitute for the original Atlantic cuts. You should get those first (eg., one of the
comp's on Rhino). But, once you've got those, and you want to hear where the Coasters went
from there, these other 12 tracks are your next logical stop. And so this CD is worth
picking up for that reason.

The Japanase "Best Hit 16" CD.
The Japanese CD of 1988 - "The Greatest Hits of The Coasters" of 1988 with 13
tracks.
Listen to 30sec audio clips
of all ten
Gardner Trip tracks
at Barnes & Noble!
The CDs listed are re-packages from one session with Gardner´s
Coasters comprising ten re-recordings for Trip in 1973 of the hits - and especially the
Gardner-led revivals are excellent! Some of the old standards are led by Jimmy Norman (who
succeeded Billy Guy in the original group). Most of the CDs also include "bonus"
tracks from Guy, recorded in 1962 (for ABC/Double-L). The best reissue of the revival Gardner-Coasters
is the British MasterTone issue! Get that one if you wanna have extra bunos tracks. It has
superb stereo sound with six Guy recordings of 1963 as a bonus, plus one extra bonus track
- One Foot Draggin´ from Guy´s Gusto recordings of 1977 - that CD has some
informative liner notes by Chris White. Or: - try to find the New Sound
2000 CD "Searchin'"! The American Legends CD, "Court
Jesters of Rock and Roll" from 2006, has very fine notes by Gary Tanenbaum
and a nice back sleeve (se images below) - Try that one (all ten revivals)!

The German Hallmark back cover (1999)
The list of all the CDs above notes how many are Gardner Trip recordings and how many are
bonus tracks - but beware - not all comprise all ten Gardner-led revivals! Only interested
in Gardner´s Coasters? - Then get the Masters issue "GOLDEN
HITS" (although there is no "liner notes" at all) or its 2002 and
2003 reissues on Laserlight and Delta, "GREATEST
HITS" and "HALL OF FAME" with same track order,
except for "Run Red Run" first (the "Hall Of Fame" CD is actually
identical to the Laserlight issue - only with a papercover outside the original 2001
Laserligth CD and the cover also tells it actually contains the 21 863 CD). On Canadian
Legacy, which has ten tracks, only eight are from the Gardner Trip session. The
Classic World CD lists 16 tracks, but contains the ten Gardner-led Trip
tracks (with Poison Ivy as fist track and Run Red Run as last).

This is the New Sound 2000 CD
(issued in 2003), titled SEARCHIN' (catalogue number NST264) which has 18
tracks listed - all ten Gardner Trip titles plus six Guy Trip plus "One Foot
Draggin'" plus the true Coasters' "Frosty The Snowman"
from ca 1992. Perfect sound!!!
Tracks NST264:
Poison Ivy, Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown, Young Blood, Searchin', Little Egypt, One
Foot Draggin', Whip It On Me Baby, As Quiet As It's Kept, TV Fanatic, It Don't Take Much, Along
Came Jones, Deodorant Song, Down In Mexico, It Ain't Sanitary, Frosty
The Snowman, Run Red Run, Love Potion No. 9. |

The Trip CD
has all the original 16 tracks from the original Trip LP 16-7 "16 Greatest
Hits" - ten Gardner and six Guy recordings (with the same track order). That
CD reissued on Passport Audio in 2005 with same track order. "Best Hit
16" is a Japanese CD also identical to Trip TOP LP 16-7 (including six of
the Billy Guy titles of 1962 - not confirmeed - it may be identical to the
British CD "The Best of The... Coasters" - with the image of
the Bobby Nunn/Billy Richardss/Bobby Sheen group, GFS 482 with One Foot Dragin´
(sic) added instead of the original LP issue´s As Quiet As It´s Kept). The Dominion
CD is identical to double LP Trip TVP-1002, incl. the 10 Gardner-Coasters Trip titles plus
bonus tracks, completed with Charlie Thomas´ Drifters of the early ´70s - the other CDs
don´t include the Drifters´ tracks. The Platinum Pop has 13 tracks. The
Hallmark CD "Their Greatest Hits" is titled "Poison
Ivy" on later pressings (with new catalogue number). The reissue has the
following track order: YY, CB, PI, Se, RRR, Whip, LE, As Quiet, It Don't,
YB, ACJ, LPNo9, One Foot, It Aint S, DIM, The Deodorant, TV Fan. The Park
South issue - distributed by Orpheus Music (from July 2002) has a very
interesting cover with the Cornell Gunter Coasters of ca 1966 (Cornell isn´t featured on
a single track on the CD!). That CD also issued on Pine (same tracks -
differing track order) and also issued on Mojo Music (The Platinum
Series) as "Poison Ivy" (the last with the following track
order: RRR, ACJ, YB, PI, As Quiet.., It Don't.., DIM, LE, It Ain't
San.., Whip It.., One Foot.., Se, LP#9). The Blu Mountain
CD has same track order as Park South (see below). That CD is now available for
downloading, titled "Run Red Run" and with diff. track order as
"He's In Love".
The US MasterTone
has 14 tracks with three fake-edited "live" recordings but excluding
"Searchin´" and "Along Came Jones" from Trip, and featuring "One
Foot..." plus "Jumbo Bwana" from Guy´s 1977
session. Track order: Yakety Yak (faked live), 2. Poison Ivy (faked live),
3. Charlie Brown (faked live), 4. Red Red Run, 5. Jumbo Bwana, 6. Young Blood, 7.
Whip It On Me Baby, 8. It Don't Take Much, 9. TV Fanatic, 10.
Down In Mexico, 11. Little Egypt, 12. One Foot Dragging, 13. Deodorant Song,
14. Love Potion #9 (audio
clips - at Artist
Direct).
The Prism Leasure CD (which has only 8 of the Gardner-led tracks plus
three Guy bonus) has a very fine color cover and insert with fine liner notes by Tony
Watts. There is an alternate version of that CD titled "The Golden Greats -
Great Jukebox Favourites" (see images below). The Direct Source issue DWT 14452 is strange since it has three
Atco tracks and the tracks
are also issued on a 2-set CD shared with The Ink Spots titled "Legends
of doo wop". Bam
CD 036 has a total of 12 titles, excluding "Along Came Jones" ,
but Humdinger, As Quiet As It´s Kept and One Foot Draggin´ added.
On Rockin´ My Soul (Sterling CD 24318 of 2000) four of the Gardner Trip
recordings - Charlie Brown, Searchin, Young Blood, Yakety Yak are featured together with
six Guy tracks (see the Billy Guy and other off-shot Coasters
CDs). The Pegasus CD (which has a cover image similar to the
Trip CD, but even more to the Legacy ATP200 CD- see image below) has the following track
order: RRR, YY, As Qiuet, YB, Whip, PI, It Don't, ACJ, LE, Se,
CB, DIM, LPNo.9, The Deodorant, It Ain't, TV Fan. The Saar CD has
11 tracks (8 with Gardner) and with "Yakety Yak" wrongly titled "Yakety Sax"
plus an image of the Cornell Gunter Coasters, Inc.
"Searchin'" on 33 Point 3 has the ten Gardner Trip tracks plus
"TV Fanatic" from Guy 1962.

Reissue
of the "Young Blood" vinyl album
- this time several tracks though in stereo !
Still in stock! Same tracks as
AD 2-4003
(and in same order) except omit:
Down Home Girl /D.W. Washburn /Turtle Dovin´ /Love Potion # 9.
Twenty (20) classic Atco cuts, almost identical to Atlantic/DeLuxe LP 2-4003 "Young
Blood", except for the three King titles and "Turtle Dovin´"
(which are not included in this). Another change is that most tracks are the stereo
versions (also issued in Europe on WEA 9-27604-2). This is a good starter if you want good
sound and a nice introduction to the Coasters´ Atco records in stereo or an
"alternate very best of" - Here you get 20 instead of 16-17 tracks, but this CD
is also a completion of your Atco collection, due to the stereo sound (so don´t hesitate
even if you have the "50 Coastin´ Classics" CDs). And ... furthermore: Several
Sequel tracks have a complete different stereo sound than this record (so you need those
too!). "Ultimate" is still available for purchase via the Internet. Compiled by
original inspiration from Kevin Eggers.
Note: this CD is in stereo (the earlier LP in mono) and includes four alternate stereo
editions: Yakety Yak, Run Red Run, Girls Girls Girls (part 1) and Bad Blood:
**** Review by George O' Leary, Canada at amazon.com:
This CD, issued in 1986 by Warner Special Products, has no liner notes at all and omits
too many Coasters hits to be regarded as "ultimate." Still, it's not a bad find,
especially at the price being asked. Elements of this group, always leaning heavily to the
comic side of things, began their careers as The Robins in 1950 on the Savoy label. Ty
Terrell. Billy Richards, Roy Richards, and Bobby Nunn had their first hit that January
with If It's So Baby, a # 10 R&B. A few months later they joined The Johnny Otis
Quintette and Little Esther for the smash # 1 R&B [nine weeks] Double Crossing Blues.
That was it for charted hits, even though, in 1954, they added two more voices in Carl
Gardner and Grady Chapman. By 1955 they had moved to the Spark label owned by the famous
team of Leiber and Stoller where several cuts, although not national charters, did quite
well locally. These included Riot In Cell Block # 9, and Framed [found here in their
original format at tracks 14 and 18]. Then they hit national success with Smokey Joe's
Cafe [track 17] which attracted enough interest from Atlantic for them to continue
distribution on their Atco subsidiary, the record ultimately reaching # 10 R&B/# 79
pop. After Atlantic signed Gardner and Nunn, and retained Lieber & Stoller as the
creative force, they added Billy Guy and Leon Hughes and became The Coasters prior to
their first release early in 1956 - Down In Mexico [# 8 R&B - track 5]. The flipside,
Turtle Dovin', also charted at # 8 R&B but is not included here. Nor is their next
release, One Kiss Led To Another, which made it to # 11 R&B and # 73 pop in September
1956. Their first in 1957 are here, however, and what a hit. The A-side, Searchin' [track
3], went to # 1 R&B and stayed there for 12 weeks, also going to # 3 pop, while the
B-side, the hilarious Young Blood [track 10], also made it to # 1 R&B and # 8 pop. The
follow-up Idol With The Golden Head [track 20] didn't fare nearlly as well, settling for #
64 pop and being shut out on the R&B charts. Strangely, only one hit emerged in 1958,
but that too was a smash with the immortal Yakety Yak [track 7] going to # 1 on both
charts, and spending seven weeks at the top R&B position, featuring King Curtis on
sax. 1959 was a banner year as Charlie Brown [track 4] hit the # 2 position in March on
both charts, again featuring Curtis, and b/w Three Cool Cats [track 13]. Continuing in the
comic vein, Along Came Jones [track 12] reached # 9 pop and # 14 R&B in early summer
b/w That Is Rock & Roll [track 11]. Later that summer they were back with the
double-sided hit Poison Ivy [track 9 - # 1 R&B (4 weeks) and # 7 pop, b/w I'm A Hog
For You [# 38 pop - not included here], and before the year was out they produced yet one
more two-sided hit: Run Red Run [track 8 - # 36 pop/# 29 R&B] b/w What About Us? [# 17
R&B and # 47 pop - not included here]. In 1960 they dipped into the oldies bag for
Besame Mucho [both sides], taking Part 1 to # 70 pop in May. This is also missing from
this set. So too is Wake Me, Shake Me which hit # 14 R&B and # 51 pop in July. But the
comic Shopping For Clothes is here [track 2], which made it to # 83 pop in October. 1961's
first hit Wait A Minute [# 37 pop], written for them by Bobby Darin and Don Kirshner, is
another omission, but Little Egypt (Ying-Yang), which reached # 16 R&B and # 23 pop
can be found at track 1. Then came Girls, Girls, Girls which peaked at # 96 pop in August,
but which found greater success a year later when recorded by Elvis. After a long drought,
and now with Earl "Speedo" Carroll, formerly of The Cadillacs, on board, they
had a # 64 pop/R&B hit in 1964 with T'ain't Nothin' To Me [not included]. Also omitted
is their last charter, a 1971 re-make of The Clovers old hit, Love Potion # 9, which hit #
76 pop. While other songs in this collection [The Shadow Knows, I Must Be Dreamin', and
Bad Blood] are equally fine examples of the successful partnership between the group and
Leiber & Stoller, they did not chart, and so it would have been a truly
"ultimate" collection had they, and a couple of the uncharted B-sides, been
omitted in favour of some of the missing hits. Even so, if you can get your hands on a
copy you won't be disappointed, either by the contents - ALL ORIGINAL analog recordings
digitally remastered - or the sound quality. |

Atco
collection (featuring hits and rarities)
A nice low-budget collection on European WEA featuring hits but also a couple of rare ones
not issued on "50 Coastin' Classics". "Lola" is only
issued on the Coasters' first LP and the Collectables 2LP CD and "Lovey
Dovey" is only featured on the hard-to-find Sequel CD and the rare
"What Is The Secret..." CD. One of the million-selling hits, "Poison
Ivy", is - strangely enough - missing. "Three Cool Cats"
is the long-running stereo alternate. No liner notes whatsoever (pity). Seeral tracks in
stereo. This issue actually has no significant value except for the cover. Well, joking a
bit - but there are better issues - although a nice starter for a new Coasters fan.

The Coasters - Bootleg
This CD on BlackTulip BTCD-2638891 was issued during
circa 2003, and contains 31 original Atco recordings. It is very rare
- and a bootleg from unknown origin (probably mostly cut from the Sequel
issues) with no information but the subtitle:
"31 Of Their Greatest Hits!". The recordings from 1958-1960 are mostly the
stereo versions. "Girls" is part 2, "Wake Me, Shake Me" in stereo, "Three
Cool Cats" is the 2:41 master version in stereo from Clarion and Edsel and
"That Is Rock And Roll" is the Carl Gardner led original mono version.
Good sound but nothing new. |

Live
recordings from 1988 !!
Terrific live-recordings from Orlando, Florida (I have the cassette & now also the
great DVD, produced in 2003). GREAT STUFF from the Rock 'n' Roll Palace Little
Darlin's in Orlando recorded in 1988, featuring Gardner, Bright and Norman; and hosted by
the legendary Wolfman Jack. Get the DVD! One simply can't stop
listening and looking at Carl's extremely tuff version of "Young Blood"!
The NQD cassette - edited in 1992 - has been obtainable via rombox.com Gardner Web Site
but is deleted today, and does not include "Poison Ivy" - but
has "Down In Mexico" from the same session and "Frosty
The Snowman" - the last a late studio recording of Florida. There are two
videos available featuring the Coasters from this session with Wolfman Jack as MC; and a DVD
7570-9 (on K-Tel Entertainment, issued in November 2003). The CD imaged above has
these tracks: (Baby That's) Rock And Roll, Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown, Young Blood, Little
Egypt, Poison Ivy. |

THE COASTERS
Atco LP 33-101, electronic stereo
LP 33-101 (1960)
Atco Records´ and the Coasters´ first LP, released after the success of
"Searchin´" in November, 1957, featuring seven Robins´ Spark recordings and
seven of the first eight Coasters recordings.
MINI ALBUM REVIEW:
One of the premier doo-wop groups, The Coasters
were loved for ther smooth harmonies, simple to appealing music, and comical
lyricism. Though this album doesn't include their biggest hits ("Yakety Yak"
and "Charlie Brown,") there's still some great moments on here. Check out
the exotic strains of "Lola" and the rollicking police drama "Framed."

COAST ALONG WITH THE COASTERS
Atco LP 33-135, stereo SD33-135, 1963 London HAK 8033 (UK),
reissued 1968 on Atlantic 588.134 (UK)
The last Coasters Atco LP, issued after the success of "Little Egypt".
MINI ALBUM REVIEW: One of the great things about the Coasters (and there are
many) is that even though these songs were written amid the sanitized
paranoia of the '50s, when they sing the word "glass" in "What About Us" you
can't help but expect them to rhyme it with some kind of "ass" joke. They
don't, but they just about do. Coasting has two of this monumental
band's most brilliant songs, the surreal rocker "Run Red Run" and the Tex
Avery-inspired "Little Egypt."
