The bad guy of the film, as it were, is the legendary bane of sailors everywhere, Davey Jones. No, not the little guy in The Monkees who inspired the character of Chekov in Star Trek. This is the villain who sinks ships at sea and drags sailors down to their watery grave. No mere mortal, the CGI animators who created the zombie skeleton crew of the Black Pearl in the first movie worked twice as hard to create Davey Jones. Disney Studios refused to even say beforehand whether Davey is entirely a CGI monster or if there was an actor in there somewhere (Bill Nighy of "Underworld"). His left leg looks normal, as does his chest. Pirates often have a pegleg, and it appears Davey Jones does...but take a closer look. It's the long, sharp leg from a giant crab. His left arm is a giant claw. His face, if you can call it a face, is a mass of tentacles. Nighy says that his character Davy Jones will very much be the villain of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and possibly Pirates of the Caribbean 3."I am a very, very, very, very bad man and I am there to make people suffer in all new ways, in ways that you won't have seen before," he smiled. While staying mum on how that will be done, he did reveal that "I have a boat and I have a crew, and they are really evil buggers."
In Peter Benchley's TV-movie The Beast (1996, based on his 1991 novel, about a giant man-eating squid), a beast from the deep menaces our heroes. But in this movie, Davey Jones is the beast and Captain Jack has the beast's mark on the palm of his hand, threatening him with a different kind of watery hell. Because of this "mark of the beast," Jones can rise from the depths and claim Jack's very soul. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife with Davey's other doomed crewmen on the ghost-ship Flying Dutchman, wrecking the wedding plans of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who join Jack on yet another misadventure. And who wanted mushy stuff in a pirate movie anyway? But don't worry, Will gives his heart to Elizabeth at the end of the third movie...
in a way.
Davey's ship, the infamous Flying Dutchman, has the skeleton of a sea serpent on the front instead of a pretty girl. When it breaks the surface into "our" world, it is covered in sealife, barnacles and dripping green/black slime. Its crew consists of sailors whose souls Davey Jones has taken, slowly deteriorating year by year, becoming more like creatures of the sea they inhabit. Most of the actors from the first movie are back, but there are new ones. Like the black-magic woman who lives in a shack in the the green swampy bayous near New Orleans: Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris of "28 Days Later"). It is in the bayou that three of the principals meet: Sparrow, Turner, and Swann. The Black Pearl itself is back, but much the worse for wear after the sea battles of the first movie. Speaking of returning actors, even the the dog with the key ring in Port Royal jail makes a return appearance. HMS Bounty used in the Brando film is seen in this one (in a somewhat minor role) as the Edinburough Trader. Also appearing is the 110-foot sloop Providence, replica of an early U.S. Navy vessel commanded by John Paul Jones, in a new fictional movie role. The Bounty replica ship sank years later in a real-life "perfect storm"
The kraken is a monster completely unlike the one seen previously in Clash Of The Titans; actually more of a giant squid/octopus monster that may remind you of the one Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre fight off in Disney's previous 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954, see below). * The Flying Dutchman's mainmast was cut from a 67-foot logweighing 7,866 pounds harvested from a ridge near Elma, Grays Harbor County, by Port Blakely Tree Farms, according to the Seattle Times, which also noted the following:
* The Lady Washington traveled more than 11,000 miles to the Caribbean and back for the first movie, earning nearly $800,000 in charter fees to play HMS Interceptor, the fastest ship in the British navy. Launched in 1989 as part of Washington state's centennial celebration, the "Lady" is a full-scale replica of the ship Capt. Robert Gray — Grays Harbor's namesake — sailed to the Northwest coast in 1788. The boat makes annual trips up and down the West Coast, and is a particularly majestic sight with her 4,400 square feet of sail unfurled. 18 crew members sailed with the boat from Aberdeen, and more than a dozen became extras or doubles in the film. The Lady Washington, despite her impressive performance in the first of the series, didn't survive to land a part in the "Pirates" sequels (the boat demolished in Curse Of The Black Pearl wasn't the real Lady Washington, but a one-fourth-scale model)

* The pirate ship Black Pearl and the British navy ship HMS Dauntless, though they looked real on the screen, were simply pieces of hull, deck, masts and sails attached to barges for various camera shots. The director of the second movie thought the Black Pearl was too slow, so (hidden) twin diesel engines were installed to give her more speed in the sequel

Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest was released July 7th, 2006. The two sequels were filmed back-to-back in 2005-07, after which Disney Studios entered the only American ship in an around-the-world sailing ship race, complete with skull & crossbones flag: Pirates Carib in Race newsReggie Lee ("The Fast & The Furious") joined the cast of Pirates 3 to star opposite Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Chow Yun Fat (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) as Captain Sao Feng in the third installment of the popular Disney film. Lee recently wrapped filming the lead in the horror film "Dimples." Chow Yun Fat's wife had also told a reporter that she thought he would be playing the famous 19th century Chinese pirate Cheung Po Tsai in Pirates 3, giving them hell - the Chinese have a lot of hells. This is his first English-language role since "Bulletproof Monk" (2003)
Voodoo from a certain black magic woman will bring back Barbossa and Jack for the 3rd film, and the Black Pearl is also back, making Davy Jones even more angry and evil! The Black Pearl is left in the middle of desert sand with Jack Sparrow in Limbo, neither dead or alive, but never underestimate the power of rocks that turn into crabs in great numbers.

Keith Richards is in #3 but Orlando Bloom will not be in the scene. The scene does not make it clear whether Richards is Captain Jack's real father or not, though he still keeps Depp's Mom close by...
* In Pirates Of The Caribbean 3, the pirates of the world realize they must combine into a mighty armada for their last stand when Davy Jones is forced to ally with the British against them. * Johnny Depp hopes there will be a 4th Pirates movie (already being written), but no word from the studio yet. Jerry Bruckheimer is working on "National Treasure 2", but says there could be another Pirates movie if Disney wants to finance it. The special effects in Pirates 3 made it the most expensive movie ever made by Disney Studios * So far, Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas characters have taken over Disney's Haunted Mansion each October, the Finding Nemo cast has taken over the previous submarine ride (at least at Disneyland in California starting June 11, 2007. It originally shut down in 1998 to be rebuilt around the flop animated film "Atlantis, The Lost Empire"). And now the characters from the Pirates movies have been added to the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride in Disneyland starting in 2006 (click on the treasure chest to see video of movie characters in the ride, or click the book to learn pirate words). There are also plans to change Tom Sawyer's Island in Disneyland to a Pirates theme. Previous version of the ride (1994). "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" was shut down for servicing recently and some joked that it will re-open as "Paris Hilton & Nicole Richie's wild drunk-driving ride"
* Opening on March 18, 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean was Disneyland's largest Audio-Animatronics project and was the last attraction which Walt Disney was personally involved in designing. He died just 6 months before it officially opened. A smaller version of the ride opened in Florida in 1973, where the Caribbean was thought to be less exotic. It is also at Tokyo Disneyland (1983) and Disneyland Paris (1992, called Euro Disneyland at the time), and will be added soon to Hong Kong Disneyland with some Splash Mountain-style elements.
The "Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Tutorial" is a special event that takes place daily in front of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The character of Captain Jack Sparrow (a Disneyland actor) holds court in enlisting budding pirates to join his crew. Alongside Captain Jack is Mack, his faithful crewman. Together they teach the audience how to be a pirate. There is also Pirate music. The time of the performances can be found on the Magic Kingdom's schedule. I don't know if this is done at the other Disney parks. There is something similar with a Star Wars theme in Tomorrowland

Blackbeard kept himself armed with 3 pistols, daggers, and 2 cutlasses. The 3 guns were cocked, ready to fire. He put slow-burning fuses in his hat or beard during intimidating hand-to-hand fighting. His ship was a captured French slaver, which he renamed Queen Anne's Revenge (he was probably a privateer on the British side during "Queen Anne's War" aka The War of Spanish Succession). Blackbeard relished his reputation and wasn't satisfied with a traditional skull & crossbones. His flag was of a devil-horned skeleton piercing a bloody heart. Others simply flew a solid-color flag of white or blood-red, meaning that no prisoners would be takenPirates are sneaky, they don't always fly a pirate flag. Some simply flew the flag of their home nation or that of their intended victim until they were close enough...
By the way, the "Stars & Stripes" U.S. flag actually consists of "mullets and barrulets" according to European heraldy.

In 1980, Texaco was drilling in Louisiana's Lake Peigneur, 125 miles from New Orleans, when they hit an underground salt dome mine 1300 feet down, causing a massive whirlpool that sucked in a tugboat, 11 barges, trees, a house and much of Rip Van Winkle Gardens into a huge hole as the lake filled the salt mine cavern. A motorboater tells on this video of escaping the whirlpool while it was sucking in a large barge. Water flowing backward in Delcambre Canal from Vermilion Bay created a 150-foot waterfall that continued filling the mine for 2 days. The lake eventually was refilled; and with a loud burping sound, 9 of the barges began spitting out of the hole like toys that had been held underwater in a bathtub. History Channel video of the maelstrom. Not even Nostradamus predicted this! Some have proposed that the sudden collapse of an undergound cavern on the ocean floor could explain ships disappearing without a trace in an ocean maelstrom. Unless you believe in Davy Jone's Locker! The name Davy may be derived from the word Daeva, an evil spirit in Persian mythology who loves to cause harm and destruction. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" teased audiences with Sparrow and Barbossa both in hot pursuit of the Fountain of Youth! "I think they're (Disney) pushing towards 2012," Bruckheimer told ComingSoon.net about the possible release date for this fourth "Pirates" movie. "Hopefully we can make it, we'll see." Gore Verbinski has decided that 3 pirate movies is enough. He's informed Disney and producer Jerry Buckheimer that he won't be directing the fourth installment. "I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future." No word on who may helm the 4th installment.
