Herbal Teas to Avoid

Many herbs can help us, but there are also many that are harmful. Just because herbs are natural does not automatically make them safe. It's because they do have the power to heal that you need to use them with caution-the same caution you should use when taking a prescription medication.
Before you decide to take herbs to treat a condition, educate yourself or consult a qualified professional. Today, more and more health care practitioners are rediscovering and learning about herbs' pros and cons.
While most herbs are very safe when used as directed, the following herbs should not be used:
Chaparral: Some claim it hellps prevent and treat cancer, but according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it may lead to liver damage and should be avoided.
Coltsfoot: Used for respiratory infections and coughing, this herb has also been linked to liver damage and cancerous tumors. It has been banned in Canada.
Ephedra: Otherwise known as ma huang, this is a popular energy-booster and diet aid. According to the FDA, it has been attributed to 165 deaths and can cause liver damage, heart palpitations, elevated blood pressure and stroke. Ephedra is banned in Florida and New York.
Lobelia: This herb acts as an expectorant because lobeline, the active ingredient, loosens secretions in the respiratory tract, thereby helping to expel congestion and improve breathing. Lobeline is similar to nicotine and has been used in the past as a smoking deterrent. However, in some cases, it causes severe nausea and vomiting. And it can also depress breating and cause rapid heart rate, leading to coma and even death.
Pennyroyal: This herb has been usedt to treat menstrual problems and coughs. While the leaves are relativelly safe, the oil can induce a miscarriage and is highly toxic. One 24-year-old woman died after using the extract. No one should use the oil.
Sassafras: According to the FDA, it can damage the liver and has been known to cause cancer in lab tests. The FDA banned it as a food additive in 1970.
Senna: This is a strong laxative that is relatively safe when used as directed. But using it for long periods of time robs the body of vital electrolytes and can lead to heart problems.
Yohimbe: Some say the bark of this tree can enhance male sexual performance. But the same ingredient that makes it an aphrodisiac contains a major alkaloid that raises the blood pressure and causes nervousness and fatigue. According to the FDA, both seizures and death have been attributed to this herb.
