Major Groom Biography

Major Groom was born in Orange County Virginia in 1762, the
tenth and last child of John and Sarah Webb Groom. Major Groom fought in
the American Revolution, taking the place of his brother John, who lost a leg
in the early days of the fighting. Major Groom took part in several
skirmishes and was present at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered.
On 1/18/1798 Major Groom married Christiana Melinda Bibb, (1780 - 1848)
daughter of John Bibb (1753 - 1830) and Sarah Thomason Bibb (1758 - 1859)
Nine Children were born to Major and Christiana Groom. They were
Sarah Bibb Groom, born Louisa County, Va 3/25/1799; John Bibb Groom, born
Louisa County VA 2/15/1801; Benjamin Bibb Groom born Louisa County Va 2/1/1803;
Patsy Chew Groom, born Louisa County VA 10/10/1805; Richard Crittenden Groom,
born Louisa County VA 2/11/1808; William Garland Groom, born Louisa County VA
12/25/1809; Mildred Ann Groom, born Louisa County Va 1/10/1812; James Littleton
Biven Groom, born Louisa County Va 2/3/1816; Julia Ann Groom born Caldwell
County 4/6/1818. Sarah Bibb married Benjamin Quisenberry. John
Bibb married Mary Draper, Benjamin married Rachel Skinner, Patsy Chew married
Samuel Baker, Richard Crittenden married Agnes White, William Garland married
Margaret Martha Ann Snelling Wall, Mildred Ann married George Collins, James
Littleton Biven married Elizabeth Ellen Snelling, Julia Ann married John Jones,
William Garland married Martha M. Jones (?)one child. After her
death he married Margaret Martha Ann Snelling Wall,( she had been married to a
Mr. Wall, there were no children). Their Children were Julia Eliza,
William Gustavus, Richard Crittenden, Elizabeth Fdettia (?), Margaret Bivian,
Emma Louise, Drew Kate, Hallie and Martha Elgie. Martha Louise
married Thomas Lynn McConnell April 16, 1878. Their children were Katie
Myrtle, Lobenze Groom, Major Bevian, Martha Virginia, and Margaret Eugenia.
Martha Virginia married Garland Motier Quisenberry, the son of
Charles Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Groom Quisenberry. Their children
were Charles Lynn, Garland Bivian, Elizabeth Nell, Martha Virginia. Nell
married Charles McLin and Martha married Fred Rand. The Groom family was
prominent in the Harmony Community and they were members of the Harmony Baptist
Church. Major Groom filed for a Revolutionary War pension under the
Revolutionary Claim Act June 7,1832. Number 7445 recorded in book 1 vol.
7 page 10. Pension record War Department. Certificate of pension
issued April 12, 1833 and sent to Thomas Haynes Princeton, KY. Inscribed
on the roll of Kentucky at the rate of 29 dollars and 36 cents per anum, to
commence the 4th day of March 1834. Major Groom came from Virginia to
Caldwell County KY in the fall of 1817. He owned a large farm that is now
the property of Mr. M. Rudolph Morris on Cravens Road, Cobb, KY. Major
Groom is buried in a family cemetery on this farm. His wife, several
children and grandchildren are also buried in the Groom family cemetery.
