1993 when my mother died, a Coolidge resident died who had no heirs. He left
one-half million to his church and one-half million to the cemetery. The chapel
was built with part of these funds. |

Sutton
CemeteryThese Grooms headstones were found in the Sutton Cemetery near Mt.
Sterling, N.C. In one you will notice Grooms being spelled Groomes. The
Mitchell Caldwell stone has on it "Murdered", supposedly George and Henry
Grooms are buried with him in the same grave. This is from the Grooms Tune

Family This is of William Anderson Grooms (he was the son of George Grooms
who was killed by Teague's Scouts in Haywood County NC) and his first wife
Catherine Cordelia Willis. The girl standing is Sarah Jane Grooms my
GG-Grandmother. She married Joseph Aaron Ellison who was from near Del Rio, Tn.
She always told that when his dad was killed his mother had to hide him under

years old at the time I believe. Submitted by Tim Barker. |

Charles Gordon
Grooms Moved from Alabama to Buffalo, Texas and lived with John Samuel
Grooms (brother) and Corine Matthews Grooms. Worked for N. Bloom General
Merchandies. He took sick and died suddenly. Charles Gordon Grooms' will was
made out to John Samuel (his brother). Buried by the grave of Alice Pearl
Grooms, his niece, in the Buffalo, Leon Co., Texas cemetery. Charles Gordon was
never married. It was said Charlie and Tee Parker wished marriage but Tee's
father, Jim Parker, would not allow it. The inscription on the headstone reads
"Dearest Brother thou has left us. Here thou loss we deeply feel. But his God
has ........ us. He can all our sorrows feel. The spelling of the name as well
as birth and death dates were verified during a trip to the cemetary. In an
e-mail note in 4/96 Marilyn Nelson indicated she thought Charles Gordon died of
TB. Submitted by Don Grooms.
Note: As stated previously, the Charles
Gordon Grooms referenced above and the headstone picture is the brother-in-law
of the same Corine Matthews Grooms included in "The following Tombstone
pictures taken June 27, 2002, by Rondina Phillips Muncy" |
