Died, April 11th, at her home in Pike County, near Ashburn,
Mrs Rebecca Jane Groom Oliver, in her 54th year. The deceased was the wife of
General J. Oliver, who with seven children is left to mourn her loss. The wife
and mother is taken, the home is left desolate, and sadness and sorrow now
reigns where once there was joy and gladness. But God, who doeth all things
well, knoweth what is best. He hath taken her to a brighter world, where the
good dwell forever close to the great white throne, for she trusted in His
promises and believed in His son. She was a child of suffering for many days
--almost two years. Sickness drew her near to her Savior, and as the time for
her departure drew near, she saw with a clear light and made preparation for
the last great change. She called her husband and children to her and one by
one gave the parting word. Lovingly she talked to them of what they had been to
her in the past and anxiously admonished them to meet her beyond the cold, dark
river, where all is bright and fair. In the kindness of her heart she
remembered friends that had learned to love her in the last patient sickness
and spoke words of encouragement to them which will not be forgotten. Husband,
children, sister and friends, take courage and go on your way, thanking God for
the sweet influence of such a life.
From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, April 8, 1996, p.
9A: "Grapevine family mourns woman killed in car crash GRAPEVINE - On
Easter Sunday, Bill and Holly Groom celebrated the resurrection of Jesus
Christ - and mourned the death of their teen-aged daughter, killed in a car
accident early Friday in Abilene. "It was a terribly emotional day," said
Bill Groom, administrative minister at Highland Meadows Christian Church in
Colleyville. "If anybody ever deserved to go to heaven, it's for certain
she did." Laura Groom, 19, a 1995 Grapevine High School graduate, died
Friday morning in a one-car accident outside Abilene, where she studied
nursing at Abilene Christian University. According to police, Miss Groom
and a passenger were traveling on a county road when she lost control of
the car she was driving on the rain-slicked highway. The car hit a ditch
and slammed into a culvert, ejecting Miss Groom from the automobile, police
said. Miss Groom was taken to a Fort Worth hospital, where she died.
Yesterday, family members remembered a loving girl who gave unconditionally of
herself. Miss Groom, who dreamed of becoming a medical missionary aiding
indigents in Central America, had already completed several short-term
missionary trips to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and other Central
American countries. "She was a wonderful person," her father said. "She
always gave everything she had." Miss Groom excelled in athletics and
earned varsity letters for volleyball at Grapevine High School, said her
sister, Heidi Groom. But it was Miss Groom's devotion to Christianity that
most will remember her for, Heidi Groom said. She said her sister was
always trying to encourage her friends to live as Christians. Maybe the
bumper stickers plastered throughout Miss Groom's room best sum up how she
tried to influence others she toucher. The stickers say: "Don't let friends die
without Jesus." A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Highland
Meadows Christian Church, followed by the burial at Bluebonnet Hills
Memorial Park in Coffeyville." back to top of page
