1. REASON EDWARD3 GROOMS (STEPHEN HERRING2 GROOM, ELIJAH1) was born
August 28, 1822 in Todd Co., Kentucky1, and died February 05, 1879 in
Dekalb, Bowie Co., Texas2. He married NANCY A. BIRDWELL Abt. 1854 in
Probably Bowie Co., Texas, daughter of ELIJAH BIRDWELL and MARY
CLEMONTS.
Notes for REASON EDWARD GROOMS:
It is my opinion that R. E. Grooms was born in Todd Co., Kentucky,
because his father is found on the Tax lists in 1821 & 1823. His father
is also listed on court records for Todd Co., in 1826. I also believed
he is living with his mother in 1840 in Weakley Co., Tenn.- a male child
of the right age shows on the census.
Reason Edward Grooms is living in Bowie Co., in 1841 when he applied for
320 acres in Bowie Co. on Jan 2, 1841, and issued Jan 4, 1844. (infor
taken from book "First Settlers of Bowie & Cass Co. Tex; SLC Family
History Library) then on the 1850 Census of Bowie Co., 8th District
Family # 312, age 27, a blacksmith born in Ky, living with John M.
Kumble. Then in 1860 Census living in the township of DeKalb, Bowie Co.,
Texas; age 30 born in Ky, with his wife, N.A. age 28 born in Tenn.,
with two children: Wm L. age 2 and Sarah R. age 5 both children born in
Texas. We next find Reason enlistment in the Confederate Army; G, 10
Texas Field Battery, Texas. Muster in at Jefferson, Texas, March 1,
1862. as a private under Capt. J. H. Pratt's Company, Artillery, Texas
Volunteers, at the age of 39, for the period of the war. Discharge date
not given. Although on one of his Return papers it states: the unit
of the Texas Cavalry Brigade, of Army of W. W., Army of the Confederate
States, Col Wm. H. Parsons, comdg, returned Sept 1862 at Camp near
Cotton Plant St. Francis Co., Ark. and also states he died at Little
Rock, Ark. Aug 21, 1862. Family records show he died 5 Feb. 1879,
place unknown, but most likely, Bowie Co., Texas. He is found on the
1870 census living with his two daughters in Precnet #4, Post office,
Dekalb, Texas. His son, William and his wife, N. A., must have both died
by 1870 since they are not listed on the 1870 census. The girls went to
live with an Aunt Louisa J. Ash when their father died. Sarah married
in 1880 to John Ward. There were no children born to this union.
During the same year, Jane W. married Benjamin Green Robberson at John
Ward's home in Dekalb, Bowie Co., Texas, on Aug. 8th, 1880.
Note: The Bowie Co., Courthouse burnt down in 1889 and all records
before that time were destroyed. Therefore unable to find any marriage
records.

Notes for BENJAMIN GREEN ROBBERSON:
Benjamin Green and Janie and May made a visit to Benjamin Cleveland in
Brawley about 1935 after his wife died. Benjamin Green Robberson went
home with Aunt May in Arkansas.
Benjamin Green Robberson was visiting Frances and Lorena Robberson,
Paris (Grease Valley), Arkansas in about 1939. While they were working
in the fields he suffered a stroke. They had supposed it was a heat
stroke, but it was really a stroke.
Lorena was unable to care for him nor was Aunt May. Charles Fite and
his dad fixed up a car and drove Benjamin Green to Houston to be with
his son Thomas (Tommy). While he was in Houston Benjamin Green died.
They brought him back to be buried in Carpenters Cemetery, near Paris,
Arkansas.
Isaac Fields was a doctor (source = Charles Fite) who had married an
indian Chief's daughter. He applied for a "headright" from the Osage
Indians near Mounds, Oklahoma for his indian blood lineage. He was
denied. Interestingly enough his sister, Jennie Robberson Inscho also
applied for an indian "headright" and was accepted. It was during this
time that they farmed about 110 acres in Mounds, Oklahoma. Next they
farmed in then Red Fork, Oklahoma.
