The Estate of Benjamin Grooms
Application for Letters of Administration State of Missouri ) ) ss County of
Nodaway ) IN THE PROBATE COURT OF Nodaway County. In the Matter of the Estate
of Benjamin Grooms, Deceased, Edward Graves says that, to the best of his
knowledge and belief, the names of the heirs of said Benjamin Grooms, deceased
and their places of residence, are respectively, as follows: Prisilla Grooms
(widow), who resides in the County of Nodaway in the State of Mo; Wm. Grooms,
who resides in the County of Nodaway in the State of Mo.; Richard Grooms, who
resides in the County of clinton in the State of Mo.; James Grooms who resides
in the County of Leavenworth in the State of Kansas; Benjamin Grooms, who
resides in the County of Nodaway in the State of Mo.; Theodore Grooms, who
resides in the County of Nodaway in the State of Mo.; Marietta McCorkle, who
resides in the County of Clinton in the State of Mo.; Benetta Fagan, who
resides in the County of Buchanan in the State of Mo.; Lizzie Daniels, who
resides in the County of Clinton in the State of Mo; Nancy Graves who lives in
Nodaway Co., Mo.; and Augusta Grooms who live in Nodaway Co., Mo.; that the
said Benjamin Grooms died without a will; that he will make a perfect inventory
of, and faithfully administer all the estate of the deceased, and pay the debts
as far as the assets will extend and the law direct, and account for and pay
all assets which shall come to his possession or knowledge. Subscribed and

I, David Groom of the County of Appanoose and the Sate of Iowa, do hereby
make my last wills by me at anytime heretofore made. I hereby direct that
Mary Ann E. Groom, my wife, act as Administrator of my Estate, if I die before
I return from Pike's Peak. I hearby authorize her to sell all of my lands, if
she wishes, and to pay all just debts against me and all debts that she may
contract to support the minor children, With the remainder of the proceeds of
the sale of the land she is to buy other lands and to have the use of the same
so long as she remains my widow. The rest is to be divided equally between my
children. If S.W. Groom and M.D. Groom, my sons, stay at home and help their
mother maintain the smaller children, they shall have two thirds of the
personal property and proceeds of the farm after she and the children are
maintained. The land that I authorized Mary Ann E. Groom, my wife, to sell
and make a deed for is the South East Quarter of Section 2 and North Half of
the North East Quarter of Section 11 in Township 70 North of Range 16 West in
Appanoose County, State of Iowa, containing 240 acres. Witness my hand this

of Bourbon County and, State of Kentucky, being weak in body, but of sound and
perfec pind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament, in
manner and form form following that is to say, First I give and bequeath unto
my beloved wife Elizabeth, the lower end of my lands to include my dwelling
house and one half of the land with my to work mares, a bay wit a snip the
other a gray, together with the farming utensils and house hold furniture. to
have the same during her life and at her death I'd bequeath the same to to my
youngest son Aaron, but at my death the above mentioned mares and household
furniture is to be appraised and if the same should amount to more than Aarons
equal share he is to pay back to the rest. Likewise my wife is to have a
sufficiency of hogs from my stock for her next years provision and one breeding
sow with one third of my cattle and sheep with my team, reids and harness. I I
do give and bequeath to my son Jacob, my bay stallion, Likewise it is my desire
that the rest of my stock should be sold and the money equally divided among
all my children. Likewise I do bequeath to my son Moses the upper end of my
land which is to be equally divided between him and my wife. Likewise it is my
desire that my waggon shall stay on my farm for the use of all my children and
they are to be equal shared in keeping here in repair and I do hereby appoint
my son Isaac executor of this my last will and testament. Hereby revoking all
former wills by me made. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and

made oath thereto and together with Moses Baddens his security entered into and
acknowledged their bond in the penalty of five hundred dollars conditioned as

Council Groom's Will
Alabama , Coosa County ss.
The last will and a testament of Council Grooms . Being in my right
mind , I do will and bequeath the following property , to wit after all just
debts are paid .
I do give unto Catherine Clark one Cow and Calf , and I do unto Mary
Posey two Cow with Calf , and I do unto Zilpha Gandy Fifteen Dollars ; And I
do give unto Andrew J. Grooms two Cows . I do give unto Elizabeth McGuirk and
her heirs an equal share of land with the above named heirs , when divided ;
And I do give unto the children of Selina Watson Five Dollars , and unto
Bryant B. Grooms Five Dollars , and I give unto Sarah Grooms Five Dollars and
I give unto Francis Grooms Five Dollars .
And I give unto Elizabeth Grooms all of the property after all the
debts are paid , and the above named property is given unto said heirs ; and
the balance of the property to remain with Elizabeth Grooms the wife of
Council Grooms all of her natural life and , then to be sold and divided
between the following named heirs to wit ; Catherine Clark , Mary Posey Zilpha
Gandy & Andrew J. Grooms & Elizabeth McGuirk , and at the widows death to be
equally divided between the last named heirs .

Will of STEPHEN H. GROOMS, deceased:
In the name of God, Amen. Taking into consideration the shortness
of life and the certainty of Death, also being much debilitated in body
yet of sound mind, think fit for the benefit of my creditors, also my
wife and surviving children, to make this my last will and testament.
1st, I would bequeath my soul unto God, who gave it to me.
2nd, I do constitute and appoint BOITE GROOMS as my lawful
Executor to attend to the said will annexed.
3rd, I further order that one hundred acres of my land whereon I now
live, shall be laid off on the East boundary of the same, by running a
north and south line through the center of said tract and immediately
after my decease, my said Executor shall be authorised to advertise
and sell the same for ready money for the purpose of paying certain
judgment and executions that are now an will be due against my
said estate, and he is hereby authorised in as full and ample manner
as I myself would be, to make the purchaser a titlein fee simple.
4th, I do further will that my said Executor shall so manage all the
rest of my said Estate, either in goods and Chattles, lands or
tenements, that he shall pay all of my ust debts as the law directs
and whatever there may be left of the effects of said estate, I do
bequeath unto my beloved wife WINIFORD, for to enable her to
support and raise our children during her natural life or widowhood,
and if any there be at her death or marriage, the same shall be
equally divided amongst my children. (not named)
5th, I do further will that my said wife WINIFORD, be and she is
hereby vested with full authority at any time she may think fit
to sell and make a title in fee simple to the remaining hundred
acres of land whereon I now live, and the effects to be
appropriated as above. Given under my hand and seal this
the 3rd day of May 1833.

Will of Thomas J. Grooms
I Thomas J. Grooms, of Clinton county Missouri, being of sound and disposing
mind and memory do hereby make and publish and declare this my last will and
testament. First: I direct that all of my just debts and funeral expenses be
paid with convenient speed. Second: I give and bequeath to my wife, Hattie
Grooms, all of the real estate of which I die possessed and all of my personal
property of every kind and description for her use and benefit during her
natural life. Third: At the death of my wife Hattie Grooms, I desire that my
real estate be divided between my daughters, Josephine Morgan, Gertrude True,
Fannie Reeves, and Cora Fitch. Share and share alike. Fourth: I desire that any
debts owing to me at my death by my son Estill Groom be canceled without
payment. Fifth: I desire that any of my personal estate remaining at the death
of my wife Hattie Grooms be divided between my children, Josephine Morgan,
Gertrude True, Fannie Reeves, Cora Fitch, and Estill Grooms. Share and share
alike. Sixth: I appoint my son-in-law, George Morgan, as executor of this my
last will and testament and I desire that my daughter Josephine Morgan be
accepted as sole security on bond furnished by said executor. In testimony
whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix my seal this 2d day of June

duly sworn according to law, doth upon his oath depose and say, that Solomon
Grooms died on the 3rd day of March A,D, 1863 at Leavenworth County and State
aforesaid, that to the best of his knowledge and belief, the names and places
of residence of the heirs of the saiddeceased, are as follows, to-wit:

In the name of God Amen I John Henderson Senior being weak and infirm in body
but of sound mind and memory blessed be God for the same do make and publish
this my last will and testament in manor and firm following (that is to say)
In the first place I enjoing it upon my Executors to settle all just and
legal claims or demand against me should there be any. First I give my wife
Sarah Henderson one third of my Estate after my debts are paid should there
be any during my natural life. I also give my oldest son Herman Henderson
five dollars, I do also give my second son John Henderson fifty dollars I do
also give my third son Giles Henderson Fifty dollars I do also give my fourth
son John Henderson Jr five dollars. I do also give my fifth son Jackson one
hundred dollars I do also further give and will that the balance or remainder
of my Estate equally divided between my five daughters. to wit. Sarah Justin,
Anna Lanuan Polly Gable, Louisa Pittman and Elizabeth Groom, In witness

And now comes Sarah Henderson, widow of John Henderson and proves and shows
to the satisfaction of the court that she has duely notified in writing
Alfred Justin and Sarah Justin his wife;; Barnaba Gable and Polly Gable his
wife; Aaron Groom and Elizabeth Groom his wife, Kinsey Lanham and Anna Lanham
his wife, And John Pittman and Louiza Pittman his wife, who constitute all of
the persons entitled to distribution in a negro boy named Allen belonging to
the estate of John Henderson, son deceased not applying therefore And
applies to the Court in accordance with said notice for an order in the sale
of said negro Boy Allen belonging to said Estate so that the money arising
therefrom may be distributed accourting to the Rights of those entitled to
distribution therein.
It is therefore ordered by the Court that the Executors of the last will and
testament of the said deceased, sell to the highest bidder at Public Outcry
at the Court house door in Platte City in Platte County Missouri on the first
Monday in May 1848 the said negro boy Allen belonging to said Estate for
cash in hand, and that the said Executors pay out of the proceeds of the sale
of the said negro Boy Allen, One Third of the whole amount of said sale to
the said Sarah Henderson widow, aforesaid As soon as she shall execute to the
other distributees herein named a good and sufficent Bond with good security
in double the amount of said one third conditioned for the refunding the same
after the death of the said Sarah Henderson and that the residue be equally
divided between and paid to the other distributees named upon their executing
their Bonds respectively tosaid Executors and good security in double the
amount of their shares respectively, conditioned for the refunding the same
with interest provided debts came against said Estate to require it And such
other refunding Bonds are also to be given by the parties aforsaid as the law
requires.

Jacob Swope, Executor of Estate of John Henderson Senior sold the negro Boy
Allen to John Owens, the highest bidder, for $521.00 leaving after costs
$485.92 for the estate.
