Local H Live Reviews

Park West, Chicago, Il, 12/11/99

Thanks to Damon for the review

Since it was a benefit show it was a short set, but it was definately one of the most energetic and rocking Local H shows. To start things off Wes Kidd played guitar tonight (tonight only) cause Max is out of town with Veruca Salt. The set was All Right Oh Yeah, All The Kids, an increadible version of Baby Wants To Tame Me, Bound For The Floor, and then for the final song Bunny and Rick from Cheap Trick came out and played He's A Whore with Local H...2 drummers and 2 guitarists...it was awsome!

The Patio, Indianapolis, In, 11/11/99

The bill for the show was Wonderdrug (a local Indianapolis band), Cupcakes, and of course, Local H. Wonderdrug played their set to the apathy of the crowd, and then gave the stage to Cupcakes. They are probably the best band I've seen open for the H. The singer's name is Preston and he's cool as hell. Also, the drummer's name is Matt Walker, who you might have heard of. He used to be the drummer for Filter, and then he "filled the stool" (as Dave Grohl would say) for the Smashing Pumpkins after Jimmy Chamberlin got too friendly with Mr. Brownstone. Local H better be careful if they keep getting these great bands opening for them. One band might just steal the show. All I have to say, is go see this band. Make sure you go to Cupcakes website. Local H came out and the crowd still wasn't really into it that much. They weren't rowdy. The thing that was cool was it's a really small place. Smaller than Thurstons according to someone in the crowd. So it had a good vibe. It was REALLY intimate so you didn't have to be beating the shit out of each other to be feelin it. So everything was kinda settled and calm until Scott says, "It's time in the show for all you people to start buying me shots." Of course at that point half the people left and went right to the bar. So Scott started off with a shot of Tequila, then like 3 shots of Jagermeister, in like, 2 minutes( for all of you people who think about this in the future Scott hates Jagermeister and Tequila. From there things kinda got insane. They started doin Highway To Hell and Scott did that laying down on his back and spinning on the floor while playing thing. While he was laying down on the ground he started playing DJ with his pedals while his guitar was feeding back. He was like twisting the knobs and moving his body with the sounds, like a DJ. It was so funny. At some point during all this Brian snapped a drum stick clean in two mid-song...I have the drumstick and a couple of pics of it. Go to "Different Local H Stuff"section to see it. Then in the next song Scott jumped into the crowd and rode around for a bit then he started jumping on the amps behind Brian. So he's standing on the amps and he puts his face directly into one of bright spotlights while standing on the amp. He then jumps down, plays somemore then he like ran directly at Nicole (the girl who takes pics for Local H and put his face like RIGHT in her camera. Then he went back to the other side, then he comes back over our way (we were in front of Brian). Scott climbs on top of the amps on our side and the only thing keeping him from falling out into the crowd was Gabe holding on to him. Then they played HFMF. And that's when all hell broke loose. People started jumping up on stage and they were taking the monitors and like rocking them back an forth with the music and shit, and I guess the crowd busted one of them. The set list was Hello, Fritzs, Cha, Son of Cha, Highway to Hell, All Right, Grrlfriend, Bag of Hammers, a little bit of Feed, Baby Wants to Tame, Bound, Eddie Veddar, Skidmarks, Cool Magnet, Bound, Static Age, R&R Pro's, and HFMF.

The Pontiac Grille, Philadelphia, Pa, 10/25/99
Thanks to Steve Entrekin for the review...

On 10/25 at the pontiac grille in philadelphia Local H played with opening bands Made To Fade and Billionaire. The set list was the same as the previous shows(10/22 and 10/23) with exception of Static age, they played Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and I'm not sure if they played Rock n'Roll Professionals. The H rocked as usual and I was very excited to see them, but I don't think they should have played there. The room was small, the stage was small and I think they really didn't like the place all that much. I think I know why they cancelled the show the last time they were gonna play there plus, I've been to a good amount of H shows at different places and that was the weakest crowd I've ever seen at an H concert. I was screaming the lyrics to all the songs except for the new ones and jumping around, but besides myself, my friends, and a few others I felt we were the only ones who were "into" it. After the show, when everyone else left(or went upstairs to the bar) it was just my friends and I talking to Scott, I think he knew that we weren't "lame" as he called the philly crowd the next night in Washington D.C. Scott did tell me that they plan to start recording in January for a "straight up fucking rock record" so I'm excited for that. I also talked to brian for a bit, he told me Wes is doing something with internet radio, and Kevin is working on a solo project. umm, that's about it.

The Heartland, South Bend, In, 10/22/99

To put this show in a nutshell, I left the Heartland in pain...my ankles hurt, I cut my finger and my ears rang, even though I was wearing earplugs. That's basicaly all that needs to be said. The bill was Chevelle and Local H, but Muchacha was added and played first. They did their thing, and got everybody started. Chevelle fucking rock. Buy this band's CD. If you like Helmet (and who doesn't) or Tool, your gonna love this band. I would definately go see them again even if the H wasn't playing. They did they're thing and got the crowd primed up. Finally out came the H wearing the Rock & Roll Professionals shirts- which feature a really muscular chick weilding a SG on the back, with the stage flip flopped. Scott played on the right and Brian's set was on the left. They started out with a new song tenativley titled "Hello". From there they drove into Fritzs Corner, Cha, and then another new one, called "Son of Cha!". Scott was talking to the crowd, at one point asking them if anybody in the place had an Altoid, cause he had that nasal thing going. Another time somebody was flipping him off, and Scott made a fake expression of mortification, then gave the person the bird back, while kissing his finger. For anybody out there who says that they're not intrested in Local H anymore and you're not goin anymore to anymore shows cause Joe's gone...You're fucking crazy. You won't be missed. I was told before the show that on Thursday night, Brian had busted the cowbell used while playing Cool Magnet. That's how hard he hits. But it doesn't end there. As far as playing ability, he's definately tighter than Joe. That's all that needs to be said on that issue. So the show rocked, and they played a whole bunch of cool stuff. During Rock & Roll Professionals (if my memory serves me right) Scott climb on the speaker cabinets on the side of the stage while playing, not even two feet from the crowd. He stayed there just fucking rocking out. He then leaped back to the stage from the cabinets. Anyone who wonders about the new songs, they sound like a good combination of stuff on PUTC and AGAD. They kinda have an AC/DC's Big Gun sound to them (you know, the song from Schwarzenegger's Last Action Hero movie?) They definately will hurt your eardrums. One of the new ones called "Baby Wants To Tame" kicked my ass. It's like 7 minutes and it kinda builds somewhat like High Fivin. It beat my ass hard. I limped back to my hotel satisfied...

the set list was increadible it went all right, cha, lucky, hit the skids, 500,000 scovilles, what can I tell you, fine and good, bound for the floor, i love rock n roll (joan jett), do you want to touch (joan jett), fritzs corner, all the kids, serve the servants (nirvana), if only (queens of the stoneage), paranoid (sabbath alex from muchacha assisted on vocals while he was drunk as hell, while mark their stage manager played drums), toys in the attic (aerosmith), he's a whore (cheap trick), heros (triple fast action..alex came back up on stage and sang the song, but he was so drunk it e slured every word), it's a long way to the top (ac/dc...I had to escort alex offstage) it was a great show....wes was saying funny shit all through out it, it was a great show...

Local H, Sept 1, 1999, Iowa City, Iowa (First show with new drummer Brian St. Clair)

March 16th, Webster Theatre, Hartford, Ct.

At the Local H show on March 16th there were two bands bands on the bill. But three actually played. Local H and Honky Toast, were the two billed acts along with a band called Muchacha. The show opened with Honky Toast playing a funky set. The lead singer looks a little like Mick Jagger, is as tall as Krist Novoselic, and has a little Steven Abner thrown in to boot. Their show wasn't received as well as it was by me by a lot of people in the audience who didn't have any taste. They played an AC/DC-type music with a tinge of Aerosmith thrown in. Their songs had some cool moments-"Watcha gonna do... honky?", and were mostly about being a pot smoking, drunk teenager. These guys would've been plastered all over MTV if it were the 70's. They also were pretty good at ignoring the some of the audience's temped reactions. When this one guy kept giving them the finger, the took it and ran. Throughout the set, they kept flipping each other off and telling each other "Fuck You" while laughing. Next came Muchacha. These guys were pretty clean cut- looking and come from Chicago. The lead singer looked like a cross between Richie Valens and the guy from the CBS show "Everybody Loves Raymond". They played a fast set of straight-ahead punk rock. Quick power chords and fleet drums. Again the crowd didn't take to them very well. There was this one bald-headed acned guy (who perhaps had shot up too many roids before the show) who drew the lead singer's ire. "Nice ink" he yelled to the guy in the crowd, mocking this guy's tattoos. They played their set, and gave a pretty good show. Finally Local H came out, opening the set with "All Right". Scott's hair has gotten a little longer. They went through the set playing all the songs from PUTC in order from the cd up until "Cool Magnet". Throughout the set, they used more effects than I've heard Local H use. It definately seems that they are moving form they're hardcore roots to a psychadelic hard-rock, which is good because as they do, maybe we'll see less of those idiots in the pit who feel girls up when they're crowd-surfing. Don't they understand High-Fivin? From there they went into older stuff from AGAD and Hamfisted. They covered Nirvana's "School" and let some kid in the audience come up and play drums during the cover while Joe took a break. The kid was pretty good and I think Scott was seriously impressed. Finally Joe retook the drum set and they finished "School" in a serious fasion. From there they finished the show out by rocking. They came back and did an encore of Manifest Destiny part 2.

Thanks to the person that sent me this...

They played PUTC straight through Cool Magnet last night to start the show off. That was awesome. Then they went to Fritz' Corner, Nothing Special, a stripped-down (no Joe for most of the song) version of Eddie Vedder and rawking out on All The Kids Are Right. Scott asked if we had requests. I asked for Cynic. He couldn't hear me, so he took a step or two in my direction and asked again... He didn't look like he liked the idea, but he started to play it... then he stopped and said that Joe didn't want to do that one. They played Back In The Day instead. They covered Sweet Child Of Mine with the opening band's drummer singing and Gabe on drums. That was cool. Strange, for a two-piece... they had up to five people on stage at some points playing. They closed out with HFMF (of course) and the crowd went nuts. The encore was Manifest Destiny part 1 followed immediately by Manifest Destiny part 2. I hope they come back to Ohio, it was a great concert.... even tho there were only a few hundred.

May 19th, Piere's, Terre Haute, In

The bill was Luke Warm, New American Shame, and of course Local H. Unfortunately I missed the set by Luke Warm, but made it for the beginning of New American Shame. NAS's music sounds like 70's rock being fronted by what I thought sounded like Def Leppard's singer. I didn't think that much of them. Their bass player was mildly annoying. Nobody stood in front of the stage while they played for much of the show. Only towards the end of the show did some people approach the stage. The people that did received a handshake from the singer. After they were done Local H took the stage and launched into All Right, and played PUTC all the way through to Cool Magnet. From there they played Fritzs, All the Kids, Eddie, Deep Cut, Skid Marks, Queens of the Stone Age cover, and on to GNR's Sweet Child'O Mine. Sweet Child was sang by the lead singer of NAS , and was backed by Scott, Gabe and a roaddie. They also pulled some guy up on stage who finished the song. They guy was reluctant to leave the stage and this caused Scott to remark jokingly, "It was fun but ya gots to go...". They then finished the show with Bound, HFMF and onto the encore with Manifest Destiny parts 1&2.

May 21, World Mardi Gras, Indianapolis, In.

What was an already weird yet great day ended with one of the best shows I've seen Local H play. The opening band was once again Lucwarm, followed by New American Shame, and of course, Local H. Lucwarm was pretty decent. They were younger (in their early 20's) and it was the last show of their "mini-tour" with Local H. They played their Tool, and Rage Against the Machine influenced set, remarking that they liked playing in a mall, escpecially one with bars in it. I felt kinda bad for them because the Indiana Pacers game was on and they're in the play-offs and Indiana is basketball crazy. There were tv's in the bar and people were watching the game. I would hate to contend with that.Next up was NAS. You know...for every once of bordom that they seemed to be playing with in Ft. Wayne, they seemed to be playing with an ounce of fun tonight. They didn't seem to be following the instruction manule for rock-stars tonight. Towards the end of their set Sean (Local H's new guitarist) and one of Local H's roadies (the skinner one) doused NAS with beer. It turns out that it was NAS's last show on the tour as well. NAS vowed to get Local H back. Local H came next and Scott started the show by saying "Hello everybody. You guys ready for this?" They then launched the set out with All Right. They went all the way through PUTC till Cool Magnet. They then played Fritzs, All the Kids, Nothing Special, Eddie Vedder, Deep Cut, Scott-Rock, Sweet Child'o Mine, Bound for the Floor. During Sweet Child NAS came out to sing and started a beer fight between themselves and the crowd. Scott remarked "If any of my stuff is ruined you guys are fucking dead!!!" Next was HFMF. It was during HFMF that the guys from NAS decided to run out into the crowd and COMPLETELY cover both Joe and Scott in silly string. You couldn't even see them. It was awesome. Local H then left for like a minute and came back to play the encore. Before they started playing, Scott told the crowd "NAS-1, Local H-big fucking ZERO!" They then launched into Manifest parts 1&2. It was probably the 2nd best show I've ever seen them play. Lots of energy. Shows like this one remind a person just what it is they like about rock'n roll...

Karma, Boston, June 4

Thanks to Kevin and Chris for the reviews!!!

The show was fucking unbelievable. Last nite they just absolutely amazed. They started of with "All Right (Oh yeah)" and played a bunch of stuff from "Pack up the Cats". In the middle of the show, someone in the crowd had a sign saying "Bigger is Better", so they just started playing it completely impromptu. They also played "Sweet Child of Mine" and let some girl come up and sing it... then the audience was yelling for "School", a Nirvana cover, so after Scott remembered how to play it, they played that... the show was completely for the fans, it was great. For an encore, they played "Manifest Destiny", and Scott went crowd surfing while still playing. The show was just incredible. After the show, Scott came out and talked with the fans... cool shit. Kevin (who was the guy holding the "Bigger is Better sign) said "I've seen Local H 12 times now and this was definately the best show!!! After Sweet Child'O Mine the rest of the set was the usual(except they didn't play anything off of ham fisted)... the setlist was: all-right, oh yeah/cha!said the kitty/lucky/hit the skids/500,000 scovilles/what can i tell you/fine and good/lead pipe cinch/cool magnet/fritz's corner/deep cut/eddie vedder/bigger is better/no more(edited)/sweet child of mine/school/high fivin' mf/manifest destiny

The Metro, Chicago, Il., June 26 (The Last PUTC gig?)

Thanks to Mike for the review!!!

They played O.K., and No Problem...the played the entire As Good As Dead album, except mixing up like HFMF and Fritz's..you know..you can't just play the hits right at the beginning. They did this American Werewolf In London thing..they had this moon hanging up, and all this fog..and then they played a clip from the movie. Scott and Joe came out with their big 'puffy' jackets from that one poster. They opened with Manifest Density 1...of course...then played BFTF...skipping HFMF until later on. They played the rest of the album...gradually, gabe turned into a werewolf, and then jumped into the crowd. Later he chased out Randy (who is the drummer from Made To Fade) and does backup vocals (not sean, the guitarist), and randy was all bloody and stumbling and stuff. Scott jumped into the crowd at the end, I forgot what song it was, and the crowd tore him apart. He finally got his guitar back up on stage, and then smashed it. You know, the Gibson SG copy with the 'googly eyes' on the headstock. During the encore, he played 'All the Kids are Right' , electric version, sitting in a chair, while his girlfriend Tina (of a year and a half or so) cut his hair off, it's pretty short now. She tossed the hair into the crowd, the kids loved it. :) Anyway, I'm sure there's a few things I missed, but when I finally see the video of it, I'll write you anything I may have forgotten. Until later then, take care, rock on.
